Mumbai Indians Fall Short Against RCB in High-Scoring IPL Clash
Mumbai Indians Struggle in IPL Match Against RCB
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 13: Following an 18-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya expressed concerns over the team's defensive performance, stating they "conceded far too many runs." The match, held at Wankhede Stadium, saw a staggering total of 462 runs scored by both teams.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, MI allowed RCB to amass 240 runs for the loss of four wickets in their 20 overs, with notable contributions from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Rajat Patidar.
In the post-match presentation, Pandya highlighted the need for MI to reassess their strategies, particularly in the powerplay, as they have been struggling to keep pace in both batting and bowling. He emphasized the importance of reflection and exploring new options to regain their momentum.
“We have been conceding too many runs lately. As a bowling and batting unit, we are always playing catch-up. We need to reflect on our performance and find ways to regain momentum. It’s crucial to perform well in the powerplay,” Pandya remarked.
While chasing a target of 241, MI started strong with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton putting up 62 runs without loss in the powerplay. However, Rohit’s injury and the quick dismissals of Rickelton and Tilak Varma shifted the momentum in RCB's favor.
Despite valiant efforts from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, MI struggled with timely wickets. A late surge from Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 71 runs off 31 balls, kept MI's hopes alive, but they ultimately fell short, finishing at 222 for 5.
Pandya praised Rutherford's performance, noting the excitement surrounding his signing due to his power-hitting skills. He stated that Rutherford's impactful innings provided the team with added confidence.
“We were thrilled to have him on board, knowing his potential. His performance today gives us an extra cushion and boosts our confidence,” Pandya added.
Earlier, RCB's innings was marked by aggressive batting, with Phil Salt scoring 78 runs off 36 balls and Kohli contributing 50 runs off 38 balls, leading to a 120-run opening partnership. Kohli and Rajat Patidar then added a quick 65 runs before Tim David's late fireworks helped RCB secure a commanding total.
With this victory, RCB has now won three out of four matches in IPL 2026, placing them third in the points table with six points and a Net Run Rate of +1.148.
