Mumbai Indians' Struggles Continue

The Mumbai Indians experienced yet another loss in IPL 2026, falling to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by four wickets. Consistent with their performance this season, MI struggled to set a competitive total, managing only 147 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. KKR successfully chased down the target in the 19th over, marking the ninth defeat for the Mumbai franchise this season.

Hardik Pandya made his return for MI in this match, but his impact was minimal. He scored 26 runs off 27 balls and did not take any wickets in his two overs. Following a disappointing season, former cricketer Michael Vaughan suggested that the Mumbai Indians should consider releasing Pandya and bringing in Cameron Green instead. Pandya had previously led the Gujarat Titans to a title in 2022 and reached the finals the following year before being traded to MI and given the captaincy.

Vaughan expressed confusion over MI's decision to bring back Pandya, stating, "I have seen enough. I didn't really see the dynamic of bringing him back. He was doing well with the Gujarat Titans, won a title there with a different set of players and a different coach. I feel Mumbai have got too many chefs in the kitchen." He also proposed that if Pandya wishes to continue as a captain, a swap deal between MI and KKR for Hardik and Green could be beneficial.

While KKR's performance in IPL 2026 has not been as poor as MI's, Ajinkya Rahane's form has raised questions about his future with the team. There are rumors that KKR may release Rahane and seek a new captain for the upcoming season. Vaughan noted, "If he wants to carry on as captain, then he'd better be with a fresh set of captains. Maybe KKR. Kolkata will be looking for a new captain. That is why the Green-Hardik swap." However, it may be challenging for KKR to part ways with Green, who, despite a rocky start to the season, has managed to score 316 runs in 13 innings, including two fifties, and has taken seven wickets.
