Mumbai Indians Dominate Gujarat Titans with Tilak Varma's Century
Mumbai Indians Secure a Convincing Victory
In a thrilling IPL 2026 encounter held in Ahmedabad, the Mumbai Indians (MI) triumphed over the Gujarat Titans (GT) by a substantial margin of 99 runs, thanks to an outstanding all-round display. Tilak Varma's first IPL century was pivotal in setting a formidable target, which the MI bowlers effectively defended.
Gujarat Titans faced a rocky start in their chase of 200 runs, losing opener Sai Sudharsan for a golden duck, dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah on the very first delivery.
Things worsened for GT as captain Hardik Pandya was trapped LBW by wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler for just five runs, leaving the team struggling at 19/2.
After four overs, Gujarat managed to reach 35/2, but their situation deteriorated further when Ashwani Kumar took the crucial wicket of Shubman Gill for 14 runs in the fifth over. By the end of the sixth over, GT was at a precarious 45/3.
Mitchell Santner then struck twice in the eighth over, dismissing Washington Sundar for 26 and Glenn Phillips for 6, leaving Gujarat at 56/5. At the halfway mark, the hosts were in dire straits at 71/5.
Gujarat's batting woes continued as Ashwani Kumar took out Rahul Tewatia for eight, pushing the score to 79/6 after 11 overs.
In the 13th over, Ashwani made another impact by dismissing Rashid Khan for 4 and Shahrukh Khan for 17, reducing GT to 86/8.
AM Ghazanfar then added to the misery in the 16th over, taking down Kagiso Rabada for 12 and Mohammed Siraj for a duck, leading to Gujarat's collapse at 100 all out. The match concluded with a comprehensive 99-run defeat for the Titans.
Ashwani Kumar was the standout bowler for Mumbai, claiming four wickets for just 24 runs. Ghazanfar and Santner each contributed with two wickets.
Earlier, MI batted first and posted a total of 199/5, largely due to Tilak Varma's explosive innings. After being put to bat by Gujarat, MI had a shaky start, losing opener Danish Malewar LBW to Kagiso Rabada for just two runs.
Despite reaching 21/1 by the third over, Rabada struck again, removing Quinton de Kock for 13 runs, leaving MI at 32/2 by the fifth over.
Rabada continued his impressive spell, taking Suryakumar Yadav's wicket for 15 runs in the sixth over, leaving MI at 46/3 at the end of the powerplay.
However, Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma steadied the innings, bringing the score to 75/3 by the 10th over. Just as they began to build momentum, Prasidh Krishna dismissed Dhir for a brisk 45 off 32 balls.
After 16 overs, MI was at 126/4, and then Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya accelerated the scoring. They took 15 runs off Rashid Khan in the 17th over and followed it up with a massive 26 runs off Ashok Sharma in the 18th over.
Tilak reached his half-century off just 33 balls during this explosive phase. Mohammed Siraj eventually broke the dangerous partnership by dismissing Pandya for 15 runs in the 19th over, leaving MI at 177/5.
Tilak Varma saved his best for last, smashing 22 runs off Prasidh Krishna in the final over to complete his century in just 45 balls. His remarkable innings of 101 included eight fours and seven sixes, showcasing a stunning recovery for MI.
Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat, finishing with figures of 3/33, while Mohammed Siraj maintained a tight line with 1/25. Prasidh Krishna had a tough outing, ending with 1/54.
