Mumbai Indians Prepare for IPL 2026

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 28: Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI), has emphasized the significance of adaptable batting strategies, particularly highlighting Tilak Varma's evolving role as a key asset before their opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Sunday.

During a pre-match press briefing, Jayawardene expressed the team's appreciation for players who can adjust to various situations and bat in different positions.

He pointed out that Varma's performance for India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup showcases this adaptability, which aligns perfectly with the Mumbai Indians' game plan. Varma, who typically bats at number three, took on a middle-order role during India's T20 World Cup triumph.

“Absolutely. We aim for that flexibility. It has been part of our strategy in the past. We have utilized this with players like Tilak, Surya, and Hardik. This approach will continue,” Jayawardene remarked.
