Mumbai Indians Coach Encourages Star Players Amid IPL Struggles
Mumbai Indians Face Challenges in IPL 2026
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - As the Mumbai Indians (MI) find themselves at the lower end of the IPL 2026 points table, head coach Mahela Jayawardene addressed the struggles of key players Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Despite their star status, both players have faced difficulties in influencing match outcomes.
Jayawardene emphasized that while Yadav and Bumrah are crucial to the team's success, they are also human and can experience tough phases. He highlighted the importance of their character and resilience, which will help them bounce back. The coach aims to alleviate the pressure on them, encouraging a relaxed mindset to trust their skills, as such challenges are common in cricket.
Currently, Yadav has scored only 162 runs in 8 matches, averaging 20.25 with a strike rate of 140.86. Meanwhile, Bumrah has taken just two wickets, averaging 132 with an economy rate of 8.8.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a crucial match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Jayawardene stated, “They are match-winners, and they are human. They will go through these things, and their character is that they’ll keep coming back and fighting. We’re advising them not to put too much pressure on themselves.”
He acknowledged that missed opportunities earlier in the season have placed MI in a challenging situation, but the team is aware of what needs to be done moving forward. Jayawardene referred to the upcoming matches as 'playoff-like' encounters, emphasizing the need for precision.
“If we had secured a few wins earlier, we would be in a better position, and confidence would be higher. Every game from now on feels like a playoff for us. These professionals understand the stakes and are ready to fight harder for future opportunities,” he added.
The five-time IPL champions have struggled this season, managing only 2 victories in 8 matches, leaving them in 9th place on the points table.
