MS Dhoni Explains Ashwin's Omission in IPL Match Against Lucknow Super Giants
Dhoni Discusses Tactical Changes for IPL Match
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 15 (Media House): MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, shared insights on the decision to exclude veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the playing XI in their recent match against Lucknow Super Giants during the ongoing IPL 2025 season.
Ashwin has faced significant criticism from fans and former players due to his lackluster performances in this year's tournament. The 38-year-old made a return to CSK after the franchise invested a substantial Rs 9.75 crore to bring him back to Chepauk.
Chennai arrived in Lucknow following a streak of five consecutive losses, prompting the need for strategic adjustments. Ashwin was replaced by Jamie Overton, a change aimed at enhancing the batting depth while still providing an additional bowling option.
In the post-match presentation, Dhoni elaborated on the rationale behind Ashwin's exclusion, stating, “We were placing excessive pressure on Ash. He was bowling two overs during the initial six. We made adjustments, and this appears to be a more effective attack. Our bowling unit performed well, but we need to improve as a batting unit. We focus on roles and responsibilities.”
Throughout Chennai's first six matches this season, Ashwin managed to take five wickets at an average of 39.6, but his economy rate of 9.90 per over raised concerns. His struggles during the powerplay were evident, as he conceded 90 runs in six overs while claiming just one wicket.
Ashwin was not the only player omitted for the match against Lucknow; New Zealand opener Devon Conway, who was retired out for Ravindra Jadeja in the previous game against Punjab Kings, was replaced by 20-year-old Shaik Rasheed.
After a strong performance from Lucknow's captain Rishabh Pant, who scored 63 runs off 49 balls, leading the Super Giants to a total of 166/7, Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra initiated Chennai's chase with an aggressive mindset, forming a 52-run opening partnership.
When CSK found themselves struggling at 111/5 in the 15th over, Dhoni partnered with Shivam Dube to revive their chances of victory. While Dube played cautiously, Dhoni showcased his experience and crafted a successful strategy for Chennai's win.
Dhoni finished the match unbeaten on 26 runs from 11 balls, playing a crucial role in Chennai's success. The final runs were scored by Dube, who remained not out at 43, leading CSK to a five-wicket victory and ending their five-match losing streak.
