Mohammed Shami's Stellar Spell Leads Lucknow Super Giants to Victory Over Sunrisers Hyderabad
Shami's Impactful Bowling Sets the Tone
In a remarkable display of skill, Mohammed Shami not only challenged the Sunrisers Hyderabad batters but also made a statement to the national selection committee during an IPL match on Sunday. His exceptional opening spell was crucial in guiding the Lucknow Super Giants to a thrilling five-wicket win.
Shami's performance was nothing short of masterful, as he delivered an impressive 18 dot balls, concluding with figures of 2 for 9 in four overs. This outstanding effort played a significant role in limiting Sunrisers Hyderabad to a total of 156 for 9.
The Super Giants successfully chased down the target, thanks to Aiden Markram's explosive 45 runs off 27 balls and Rishabh Pant's unbeaten 68 runs from 50 balls, sealing the victory with just one ball remaining.
Pant's Heroics in the Chase
The final stages of the chase became tense, with nine runs required off the last over. However, Pant showcased his prowess by hitting Jaydev Unadkat for two consecutive boundaries, including a stunning lofted shot over mid-off, to finish the match in style.
Pant's innings featured nine boundaries, and his shot selection was particularly impressive on a pitch that offered assistance to the Sunrisers' spinners, Harsh Dubey and Shvang Kumar.
Shami, the 35-year-old veteran, set the tone early in the match during the LSG's bowling Powerplay. He dismissed the formidable opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head with successive deliveries, employing a variety of slower balls.
Support from Young Talent
Young bowler Prince Yadav also made a significant contribution, taking 2 for 34 in four overs, with his outswinger being particularly noteworthy. While Pant might have hoped to bowl out SRH for under 100 after they stumbled to 26 for 4, Heinrich Klaasen (62 off 41 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (56 off 33 balls) mounted a strong counterattack, adding 116 runs for the fifth wicket.
However, the match took another turn as SRH suffered a dramatic collapse, losing five wickets for just 14 runs in the last 2.2 overs.
During the chase, LSG faced some challenges, but Pant, showing maturity, balanced aggression with caution, ensuring his team crossed the finish line.
Shami's Reminder to Selectors
Shami's exceptional opening spell served as a powerful reminder to the national selectors of his capabilities. He quickly adapted to the pitch conditions, effectively taking pace off his deliveries.
He bowled a series of full deliveries to Head, allowing only a single, and when Abhishek took strike, he delivered a loopy ball that was caught by Manimaran Siddharth at short third-man.
After bowling three maiden overs, Shami was substituted as an Impact Player after the 10-over mark, just as SRH attempted a mini-recovery.
Despite their early struggles, Klaasen and Reddy adopted an aggressive approach, leading to a remarkable fifth-wicket partnership of 116 runs in just over 10 overs.
However, once both were dismissed in quick succession, LSG regained control, ultimately restricting SRH to under 160, which proved to be a decisive factor in their victory.
