Exciting IPL Showdown Ends in Super Over
New Delhi [India] - On April 17, the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium reached an exhilarating climax, thanks to Mitchell Starc's exceptional performance in the final over, leading to the first super over of the season.
With RR needing nine runs to win, Starc delivered a remarkable over, conceding only eight runs, which pushed the match into a super over. In that super over, RR set a target of 12 runs after scoring 11.
For DC, KL Rahul and Trishan Stubbs took to the crease, while Sandeep Sharma bowled for RR. The duo completed the chase in just four balls.
Earlier in the match, Rajasthan Royals began their innings with Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal, chasing a target of 189. The pair attacked Mukesh Kumar in the second over, scoring 15 runs.
Jaiswal continued the assault on Mitchell Starc in the third over, hitting him for 19 runs, including two fours and a six. After a dropped catch by Ashutosh Sharma, Samson capitalized by hitting a four and a six off Vipraj Nigam in the final over of the powerplay.
Samson had to retire hurt in the sixth over due to back pain, and Riyan Parag joined Jaiswal, who ended the powerplay at 63/0, with Jaiswal on 27.
DC's Axar Patel dismissed Parag for 8 in the ninth over, and Nitish Rana came in to support Jaiswal, who reached his fifty in the 12th over.
Kuldeep Yadav took out Jaiswal for 51 off 36 balls, which included three fours and four sixes. Dhruv Jurel then partnered with Rana, who was dropped by Tristan Stubbs off Axar Patel's bowling in the 15th over.
Rana attacked Axar Patel, scoring 16 runs in that over, and later hit a six and a four off Kuldeep Yadav in the 16th over. Jurel finally found his rhythm, hitting a six off Mohit Sharma, while Rana secured his second fifty of the IPL season in the 17th over.
Starc dismissed Rana for 51 off 28 balls, which included six fours and two sixes, bringing Shimron Hetmyer to the crease. With nine runs needed from the last over, Starc's brilliant bowling led to the super over.
In the super over, RR batted first with Riyan Parag and Hetmyer, but Parag was run out on a free hit. Jaiswal came in next but was also run out, leaving RR with 11 runs to defend.
DC's KL Rahul and Trishan Stubbs then took to the crease, with Sandeep Sharma bowling for RR. They successfully chased down the target in just four balls.
Earlier, a strong performance from the middle order, led by Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs, helped Delhi Capitals post a solid total of 188/5 in their innings against Rajasthan Royals.
After being put to bat first, the Capitals started strong with opener Abhishek Porel, who scored 23 runs in the second over against Tushar Deshpande.
However, the momentum shifted when Jake Fraser-McGurk fell for 9 to Jofra Archer, followed by Karun Nair, who went out without scoring.
Porel, undeterred, formed a crucial 63-run partnership with KL Rahul, who contributed 38 runs before falling to Archer. Porel narrowly missed a half-century, scoring 49 off 37 balls, including five boundaries and a six, before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga.
Axar Patel then took charge, scoring 34 off just 14 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana.
Alongside Stubbs, Axar built a 41-run partnership that kept the scoreboard moving. Stubbs finished unbeaten on 34 off 18 balls, including two boundaries and two sixes, targeting Sandeep Sharma in the final over to help DC finish strong.
Stubbs also shared an unbeaten 42-run partnership with Ashutosh Sharma (15*) in the death overs, ensuring Delhi ended with a competitive total. For the Royals, Archer stood out with figures of 2/32, while Hasaranga and Theekshana each took a wicket.
