Marco Jansen Reflects on IPL Success and Prepares for WTC Final

Jansen's Transition from IPL to WTC Final

Arundel [UK], June 6: South African fast bowler Marco Jansen has shared insights about a message he received from Punjab Kings' head coach Ricky Ponting before heading off to the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's next week.

Jansen showcased impressive performance during the recently concluded 18th season of the IPL, claiming 16 wickets across 14 matches, helping Punjab Kings reach the finals.

Having made a mark under Ponting's guidance, the 25-year-old departed from Punjab's camp early to join his national squad ahead of the WTC final on Wednesday. Before his exit, Ponting extended his best wishes but humorously expressed a desire for Jansen's team to lose the WTC trophy.

“Before I left India, he told me, ‘good luck, I hope you do well, but I hope you lose,’” Jansen recounted to ICC Digital from Arundel, following a rain-affected warm-up match against Zimbabwe.

Jansen praised Ponting for boosting his confidence, emphasizing his eagerness to apply this newfound belief in the upcoming high-pressure match for the WTC trophy.

“I learned a lot from him, especially regarding mental strength. He maintains a positive outlook and focuses on the good rather than the bad,” Jansen noted.

“That’s why he’s considered a legend; he encourages you to think about the possibilities instead of the pitfalls. His support during the IPL has been invaluable, reminding me of what I can achieve,” he added.

In preparation for the WTC final, South Africa has enlisted the expertise of England's renowned bowler Stuart Broad in a consulting capacity. Jansen is eager to absorb insights from the seasoned player.

Broad, known for his ability to unsettle Australian batsmen, has an impressive record of 110 wickets at Lord's, making him a valuable resource for Jansen.

“He has extensive experience against Australia at Lord's. I plan to ask him about strategies he employed to dismiss certain batsmen. However, while gathering information is beneficial, the execution on the day is crucial,” Jansen explained.

“You might take a wicket with a delivery you never intended to bowl. It’s essential to have a plan, but once on the field, you must adapt and hope for successful execution,” he concluded.
