Manav Suthar Praises Shubman Gill's Captaincy for Gujarat Titans
Suthar Commends Gill's Leadership Skills
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, spinner Manav Suthar has expressed admiration for the leadership qualities of Shubman Gill, highlighting his strategic insight, effective communication with bowlers, and ability to foster a relaxed atmosphere within the team.
When asked about Gill's role as a potential 'bowling skipper', Suthar noted that Gill has excelled in managing the bowling lineup and establishing intelligent field placements during tense moments.
"His leadership style is impressive; he effectively guides the team and players. Recently, in IPL 2026, we managed to restrict LSG to under 170 runs and subsequently won the match with ease. Gill's field placements and his supportive dialogue with bowlers are commendable," Suthar remarked.
The young spinner further characterized Gill as a captain who prioritizes empowering his bowlers and granting them autonomy on the field.
"We can definitely consider him a bowling captain. During a match against RCB in Bengaluru in the 2024 season, I felt very supported and free to bowl under his guidance," he added.
Suthar also countered the notion that the intense presence of head coach Ashish Nehra in the dugout creates pressure, asserting that the team environment remains straightforward and encouraging.
Nehra is known for his animated demeanor during IPL matches, often stepping out of the dugout to engage with the game closely. However, Suthar emphasized that the coach's approach is centered on simplicity, which greatly benefits the team.
"It's not as it seems. Coach Ashish sir has made it a point to keep things uncomplicated, which is crucial in cricket. His focus on simplicity is very helpful for us," Suthar explained.
When questioned about who lightens the mood in the dressing room during the IPL season, Suthar mentioned that the team operates as a cohesive unit, rather than depending on any one person.
"There isn't a specific individual responsible for that. We all support one another and stand together through both good and bad times, like a family," he concluded.
Suthar was retained by the Gujarat Titans for Rs 30 lakh in the previous IPL auction. He was initially acquired for Rs 30 lakh in 2025 and Rs 20 lakh in 2024. Earlier in his IPL career, he served as a net bowler during the team's title-winning campaign in 2022.
He made his IPL debut for the Gujarat Titans in May 2024 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Following two losses in the initial matches of IPL 2026 against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans rebounded with a thrilling one-run victory over Delhi Capitals and a comfortable seven-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants.
Their upcoming match is against the three-time champions KKR at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.
