Manav Suthar's Journey in Spin Bowling

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 15: Rising star Manav Suthar of the Gujarat Titans (GT) has acknowledged the significant influence of seasoned Indian cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in enhancing his understanding of spin bowling.

As he prepares for GT's upcoming match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 17 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Suthar reflected on his experiences with the India A team and international tours to England and South Africa, where he engaged in valuable discussions with these accomplished spinners.

The 23-year-old left-arm spinner emphasized that one of the most important lessons he learned from Ashwin and Jadeja was the necessity of maintaining consistency in line and length, a skill both players have perfected throughout their careers.

“Yes, I’ve had conversations with Ashwin Bhaiya and Jaddu (Jadeja) Bhai. During my time with the India A team and on our tours to England and South Africa, they shared a lot about the essentials of spin bowling. They stressed the importance of being consistent in hitting the same spot, which is crucial. The more consistent you are, the more effective you become,” Suthar stated.

At just 23, Suthar boasts an impressive record in First-Class (FC) cricket, having taken 129 wickets in 29 matches and 52 innings, with an average of 25.76. His achievements include six five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket matches.

Earlier this year, he celebrated his first FC century while playing for Rajasthan against Himachal Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 match held in Jaipur.

When asked about the significance of batting practice, the GT all-rounder highlighted his commitment to improving his batting skills, noting that his training is largely influenced by match scenarios.

“Whenever I get the opportunity to bat, especially during the ongoing IPL 2026 matches, I focus on what’s crucial for the match situation, considering my batting position. My aim is to concentrate on those aspects as much as possible,” Suthar explained.

Suthar expressed confidence in his development as a well-rounded cricketer, stating that he is diligently working towards becoming a reliable all-rounder for India's white-ball team in the near future.

“Absolutely. I’ve been dedicated to improving my batting over the past 3-4 years. My goal is to contribute effectively with the bat, which will benefit the team and help us secure victories. I strive to excel in all three areas to support the team,” he added.

Last year, Suthar was retained by the Gujarat franchise for Rs 30 lakh during the IPL auction. Previously, he was acquired for Rs 30 lakh in 2025 and Rs 20 lakh in 2024. He initially joined the team as a net bowler during their victorious 2022 campaign.

Suthar made his IPL debut for the Gujarat Titans in May 2024 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

After facing defeats in their first two IPL 2026 matches against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans rebounded with a thrilling one-run victory over Delhi Capitals and a comfortable seven-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants.

Their next challenge is against the three-time champions KKR at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.
