Messi's Heartfelt Goodbye to Kansas City

On July 14, in Missouri, Argentina's captain Lionel Messi expressed his gratitude to Kansas City as he prepared for the FIFA World Cup semifinal against England.

Messi took to Instagram on Monday to thank the city that played a significant role in Argentina's World Cup journey, stating, "The last one in Kansas City! Thanks for everything!!"

Despite his extensive international experience, Messi has never faced England in a competitive match. This upcoming semifinal is set to be a historic encounter, with a spot in the World Cup final on the line, further intensifying one of football's greatest rivalries.

Messi remarked, "It's special," during a press conference after Argentina's 3-1 extra-time win over Switzerland, which secured their place in the semifinals. He noted, "It's my first time playing against England. I've faced every major team except them, and it's always exciting to compete against such strong opponents, especially in a World Cup semifinal."

Throughout his illustrious career, the 39-year-old has battled against football giants like Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France, but England has eluded him until now. His closest encounter was a friendly match in Geneva in 2005, where Argentina lost 3-2, and Messi was unavailable due to a red card received in his debut.

Argentina enters the semifinal after a thrilling knockout match, defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time. Messi assisted in Alexis Mac Allister's opening goal from a corner, followed by Julian Alvarez's remarkable goal and Lautaro Martinez's late finish to secure the win.

This match marked the first World Cup game since Argentina's group-stage victory over Poland in Qatar 2022 where Messi did not score.

The reigning champions have demonstrated incredible resilience in the knockout stages, narrowly defeating Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time and coming back from a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16.

Messi stated, "We need to rest as we've been under significant pressure, and it's taken a toll on us. The team feels it, but we're ready to continue competing at our best."

This semifinal revives a classic rivalry, as England and Argentina have not faced each other in a competitive match since the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where England won 1-0.

Now, over twenty years later, Messi has the chance to create his own legacy in this storied rivalry as Argentina aims for a place in the final and seeks to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to defend the FIFA World Cup title.
