KKR Secures Crucial Victory Against MI
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 21: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) managed to stay in contention for the playoffs by defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by four wickets at Eden Gardens on Thursday, thanks to impressive performances from Rovman Powell and Manish Pandey.
This victory marks KKR's sixth win in their last seven matches, placing them at sixth in the points table with six wins, six losses, and one no result. Meanwhile, MI sits at ninth with four wins and nine losses.
In pursuit of 148 runs, Finn Allen began with two boundaries against Deepak Chahar but was dismissed in the same over for eight runs off five balls, leaving KKR at 10/1.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey then steadied the innings, accumulating 14 runs off Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth over, which included three boundaries.
The partnership of 38 runs came to an end when Corbin Bosch dismissed Rahane for 21 runs off 17 balls, which included four hits to the boundary. Bosch also took out Cameron Green for just four runs, leaving KKR at 54/3 in 7.1 overs.
Manish (32*) and Rovman Powell (15*) guided KKR to 84/3 at the halfway mark of 10 overs.
With a boundary from Manish, KKR crossed the 100-run threshold in 12.1 overs. Powell then struck two fours off Raghu Sharma, leaving KKR needing 36 runs to win.
Jasprit Bumrah claimed the crucial wicket of Manish, who scored 45 runs off 33 balls with six boundaries, reducing the target to 30 runs in 30 balls as KKR stood at 118/4 after 15 overs.
Allah Ghazanfar then dismissed Powell for 40 runs off 30 balls, which included three fours and two sixes, leaving KKR at 124/5 in 15.2 overs.
Tejasvi Dahiya and Rinku Singh brought KKR closer to victory, but a twist occurred when Tejasvi fell to Bosch for 11 runs off 12 balls, leaving KKR at 140/6 in 18.5 overs.
Ultimately, KKR completed their chase at 148/6 in 18.5 overs, with Rinku (9*) and Anukul Roy (4*) remaining not out.
In their IPL 2026 encounter, KKR's disciplined bowling restricted MI to a modest total of 147/8.
After being put to bat first, MI started cautiously, reaching 10/0 in the first two overs. However, KKR all-rounder Cameron Green struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Ryan Rickelton for six runs and Naman Dhir for a duck, leaving MI at 17/2.
The pressure mounted as Saurabh Dubey sent Rohit Sharma back for 15 runs, leaving MI struggling at 24/3 after four overs.
Dubey continued his impressive performance by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for 15 runs, as MI ended the powerplay at 46/4.
After a rain delay, MI batters Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya cautiously rebuilt the innings, reaching 64/4 at the halfway mark.
Kartik Tyagi struck in the 14th over, dismissing Tilak Varma for 20 runs, further complicating MI's situation at 84/5.
MI's batting woes continued as Hardik Pandya was bowled by Sunil Narine for 26 runs, leaving MI in a precarious position.
In the final overs, Corbin Bosch played a crucial innings, scoring an unbeaten 32 runs off 18 balls, helping MI reach a total of 147/8.
