Kolkata Knight Riders Coach Confident in Varun Chakravarthy's Return Ahead of IPL 2023
Confidence in Varun Chakravarthy's Performance
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], March 20: As the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar has expressed his unwavering support for spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Nayar emphasized that Chakravarthy is a vital player for the franchise, having consistently performed well in previous seasons. He believes that the break following the T20 World Cup could be advantageous for the bowler.
During a pre-season press conference in Kolkata, Nayar and Ajinkya Rahane discussed their upcoming campaign, which kicks off against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 29. KKR, a three-time champion, is eager to secure their fourth title.
Chakravarthy's performance in the T20 World Cup was a mixed bag. He emerged as one of the top wicket-takers, claiming 14 wickets at an average of 20.50. However, his performance fluctuated, with a strong showing in the group stage where he took nine wickets, followed by a less effective Super Eight round where he managed only five wickets and saw his economy rate rise significantly.
Nayar acknowledged that such ups and downs are common in T20 cricket, influenced by various factors including match frequency, pitch conditions, and the phases of the game in which a bowler operates. He likened Chakravarthy's situation to that of a batter who occasionally struggles to score runs.
He stated, "In T20 cricket, it’s normal to experience lean patches. Varun has played extensively over the past year, and many elements can affect his performance. Sometimes, the conditions may not favor his bowling style."
Nayar also highlighted the importance of not placing undue pressure on Chakravarthy, noting that the team has depth and can rely on other players if needed. "He has had a ten-day break since the World Cup, which can be crucial for a cricketer. The beauty of team sports is that if Varun doesn’t perform, others can step up. We want to ensure he feels supported," he added.
Last season, Chakravarthy was the seventh-highest wicket-taker in the IPL, securing 17 wickets at an average of 22.52 and an economy rate of 7.66, with his best figures being 3/22. Over his 83 matches with KKR, he has taken 99 wickets at an average of 23.74, including two four-wicket hauls and a best performance of 5/20.
