KL Rahul Reflects on IPL Milestone and Team Success Over Personal Achievements
KL Rahul's Perspective on IPL Achievements
New Delhi [India] - On May 1, KL Rahul, a prominent player for the Delhi Capitals (DC), expressed that while surpassing the legendary MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) run rankings is a significant personal achievement, it is not his primary focus.
He emphasized that the essence of cricket lies in team victories, and his ultimate aspiration is to secure multiple IPL championships akin to MS Dhoni's legacy.
Rahul stated that equaling Dhoni's five IPL titles would hold far greater significance than any individual record.
In a recent IPL match in New Delhi against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), KL Rahul showcased an impressive performance, scoring 152 runs, which allowed him to surpass both MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina, making him the fifth-highest run-scorer in IPL history.
"I didn’t even realize I had overtaken Mahi bhai on the all-time IPL run-scorers list. The milestone I truly aspire to match is his five IPL trophies with CSK. Over a long career, personal achievements can feel rewarding, affirming that my hard work has been worthwhile. However, cricket is fundamentally a team sport. Winning trophies and being part of successful teams is what drives me. Each season, I strive to win the IPL, regardless of the team I represent. That is what truly matters to me. Personal milestones are encouraging, but what would genuinely bring me joy is winning as many trophies as MS Dhoni," KL Rahul shared during an interview on JioStar.
Rahul also discussed his unique bond with the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and his performances against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Originating from Karnataka, Rahul acknowledged his strong emotional connection to M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where he spent his childhood watching matches and dreaming of playing there.
He noted that this familiarity and emotional tie to the venue enhances his confidence, aiding his performance not only against RCB but also in international matches held there.
"I don’t change my approach against RCB. I’ve pondered this extensively. If there’s a mental switch, why can’t I apply it against every team? I haven’t found an answer. But Chinnaswamy holds a special place in my heart. I grew up there, watching players and dreaming of playing on that ground. So, a psychological switch occurs when I step onto that field. It’s not just against RCB; I’ve performed well in international games there too. Certain stadiums create a positive atmosphere that makes you feel you’ll excel. I’m pleased to have consistently performed against a top-tier, defending champion like RCB. As an athlete, you aim to challenge yourself and deliver your best against strong teams. That’s when something clicks," he added.
In the current IPL season, Rahul has been a key player for DC, accumulating 358 runs in eight matches with an average of 51.14.
During this season's encounter against RCB at their home ground in Bengaluru, Rahul scored a remarkable 57 runs off 34 balls, contributing to his team's six-wicket victory over RCB.
