KKR Faces Early Setbacks with Pathirana and Rana's Injuries Ahead of IPL 2026
Injury Concerns for Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are bracing for a challenging start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, as pacer Matheesha Pathirana is likely to be sidelined during the initial matches. Additionally, the status of Harshit Rana remains uncertain, as reported by a prominent sports news outlet.
KKR's head coach, Abhishek Nayar, revealed that Pathirana, who was acquired for Rs 18 crore during the IPL auction, is expected to return only by mid-April. The Sri Lankan bowler is currently rehabilitating from a calf injury that kept him out of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
During a pre-season press conference, Nayar provided an update on Pathirana's recovery, stating, "He is currently under the care of the Sri Lankan cricket board, and they anticipate he will be ready to play around mid-April. That’s the latest we have."
The team is also dealing with the absence of Harshit Rana, a crucial fast bowler, who suffered a knee injury during a warm-up match against South Africa prior to the T20 World Cup.
Nayar expressed that Rana's injury is a significant setback for the team, emphasizing his vital role in recent seasons. He mentioned that KKR is actively assessing potential replacements with input from the leadership team.
"Losing Harshit is a major blow. He has been a key player for us, especially during our championship season. Replacing him won't be easy, but we are currently evaluating several bowlers to find the right fit for his role," Nayar explained.
KKR is scheduled to begin their IPL 2026 journey against the Mumbai Indians on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Following that, they will compete against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and then face last year's finalists, Punjab Kings, on April 6, also at Eden Gardens.
Their fourth match will see them up against Lucknow Super Giants on April 9 at Eden Gardens.
