Kieron Pollard Takes the Helm as Head Coach

In a significant announcement, the Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach for the upcoming IPL 2027 season. This decision was revealed by the franchise on Saturday.

Pollard, who has served as the batting coach for the team in recent seasons, steps into this role following the departure of Mahela Jayawardene.

In a statement, the Mumbai Indians expressed their enthusiasm about Pollard's promotion, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the player and the franchise. “We are excited to elevate Kieron Pollard to Head Coach, marking a significant chapter in our history,” the statement read.

The franchise emphasized that Pollard's appointment signifies their dedication to enhancing the team's legacy while nurturing talent and fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the field.

“His leadership will be grounded in the invaluable experience gained during MI’s most triumphant years, coupled with a vision to guide the team into its next phase,” the franchise added.

Despite being one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, the Mumbai Indians last clinched the title seven seasons ago in 2020. A key challenge for Pollard will be to break this title drought.

Pollard expressed his deep connection with the team, stating, “Mumbai Indians have played a pivotal role in my life and career. The bond I share with the players and the Paltan is incredibly meaningful to me.”

Reflecting on his journey, he noted, “Having been part of this organization as both a player and a coach, I fully grasp what Mumbai Indians represent and the weight of the responsibility that comes with wearing the Blue and Gold.”

At 39, Pollard has had a remarkable career in T20 leagues globally, having exclusively represented MI in the IPL from 2009-10 until his last game in the 2022 season. He also played for MI New York in the Major League Cricket this year.

During his tenure with MI, Pollard participated in 189 matches, scoring 3,412 runs at an impressive strike rate of 147.32, with an average of 28.67, including 16 half-centuries. He also took 69 wickets, with his best bowling figures being 4/44.
