Karnataka BJP Leader Opposes MLAs Requesting IPL Tickets
BJP President's Stance on IPL Tickets
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], March 27: BY Vijayendra, the President of the Karnataka BJP, expressed his disapproval on Friday regarding MLAs requesting tickets for the Indian Premier League (IPL). He emphasized that elected officials should not seek any special treatment.
“As legislators, we are not above the common citizen. It is inappropriate for us to request special privileges. I stand against the notion of legislators asking for IPL tickets,” Vijayendra stated during a press conference at the party's state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan.
He further criticized the state government, accusing it of being insensitive and careless, which he claims contributed to the tragic loss of 11 lives in a previous incident.
“Given that the memory of that tragic event is still fresh, it is equally inappropriate to seek special passes or tickets for ourselves. I do not support this,” the BJP President remarked.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore shared similar sentiments, asserting that elected officials should not anticipate preferential treatment regarding match tickets.
In a statement to the media, Tagore noted, “While matches are enjoyed by the public, it is not commendable for electoral representatives to seek such tickets. They should not be considered privileged individuals entitled to these benefits. IPL tickets ought to be sold transparently, without any special status for MLAs or MPs.”
This discussion arises just before the IPL 2026 season opener, featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Sunrisers Hyderabad at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
The topic also brings back memories of a tragic event from last year. On June 4, a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in 11 fatalities and over 50 injuries, as approximately three lakh fans gathered to celebrate RCB's first IPL title victory.
In remembrance, the Karnataka State Cricket Association has decided to leave 11 seats vacant during IPL and international matches held at the venue.
