JITO Premier League's Ambitious Vision
Colombo [Sri Lanka], September 1: Vicky Oswal, the chairman of the JITO Premier League (JPL), has shared his optimistic outlook regarding the franchise-based T20 league, emphasizing its potential for substantial growth in the upcoming years as it aims to broaden its reach throughout India.
The inaugural season of the JPL is currently taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from August 24 to September 5, featuring 12 franchise teams competing in 33 matches, showcasing nearly 250 top-tier cricketers from India.
In an interview, Oswal highlighted the significance of the league's initial years and discussed plans to introduce the competition in India. He believes that implementing a state-wise and cross-state format could significantly enhance audience engagement and viewership.
“The first three years are crucial for any new league or startup. We are navigating through international waters, which is quite challenging. We anticipate that the league will expand considerably once we establish ourselves in India, following the IPL model of state and cross-state competitions. This approach is likely to attract large crowds and boost viewership. In three to five years, I expect the league's valuation to increase by at least 10 to 20 times,” he stated.
Oswal's vision for the JPL is to create a professionally managed cricket league that fosters sporting excellence, nurtures young talent, and establishes a sustainable global sports platform.
The tournament is being organized by the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) Apex Team, led by Chairman Prithviraj Kothari, President Vijayji Bhandari, Secretary General Lalitji Dangi, Treasurer Sampatji Chaplot, and Director In-Charge Jinendra Kumar Munoth.
The 12 franchises participating in the league include Bengaluru Blasters, Chennai Striker Kings, Golden Eagles Delhi, Gujarat Gladiators, Indore Hawks, Mumbai Kings, Mumbai Sobo Stars, Pagariya Strikers Maharashtra, Pune Peshwas, Rajasthan Rajvansh, RDB Monarch Bengal Indians, and SLJ Royals Hyderabad.
Oswal, who is also involved with the Mumbai Kings franchise, expressed his belief in the enduring appeal of T20 cricket, asserting that it will maintain its significance in the sports arena despite the rise of shorter formats like T10.
“T20 cricket is here to stay. While some suggest that T10 will dominate, it is a very fast-paced game. A minimum of 20 overs is essential for a match to be enjoyable. I believe T20 will remain relevant. Although shorter formats may emerge for entertainment, they won't replace international sports. The talent among young players is evident, and their dedication to the sport is remarkable,” he remarked.
The JITO Premier League aims to offer a competitive environment for cricketers, nurture young talent, and create a professionally managed sports ecosystem.
The first season of the JPL in Colombo will wrap up on September 5.
