James Foster Joins Chennai Super Kings as Fielding Coach for IPL 2026
James Foster Takes on New Role with CSK
New Delhi, March 16: Former England cricketer James Foster has been appointed as the fielding coach for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as they gear up for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, as reported by a leading sports news outlet.
Foster will be part of the coaching team led by head coach Stephen Fleming. He will collaborate with batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons, while also engaging with the team's leadership, including former CSK captain MS Dhoni and the newly signed Sanju Samson.
Having played 23 matches for England as a wicketkeeper from 2001 to 2009, Foster has accumulated extensive coaching experience in franchise cricket since his retirement in 2018.
This year, he led the Desert Vipers to victory in the International League T20 as head coach in January. Recently, he was appointed as the assistant coach for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred. Foster has also contributed to coaching roles for both England and New Zealand at the international level.
Previously, he spent several seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders, where he held positions as both fielding coach and assistant coach.
The five-time IPL champions, CSK, will kick off their 2026 season on March 30 against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Their upcoming matches include a home game against Punjab Kings on April 3, an away match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 5, and another home encounter with Delhi Capitals on April 11.
CSK faced a challenging 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the table with only four wins from 14 matches. Ruturaj Gaikwad initially captained the team, but MS Dhoni took over the captaincy after Gaikwad's injury.
It is noteworthy that IPL 2026 may mark Dhoni's final appearance in the league.
In the previous season, Dhoni performed reasonably well, scoring 196 runs in 14 matches with an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17.
