Jacob Bethell's Journey: Rising Star of Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Jacob Bethell's Growth in IPL
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India] - May 4: Jacob Bethell of Royal Challengers Bengaluru is steadily building his confidence and reputation. Now in his second season with the team, the 23-year-old English cricketer shared insights about his path from Barbados, his adaptation to the high-stakes environment of the IPL, and the mentorship he receives from experienced players.
Reflecting on his journey, Bethell stated, “Growing up in Barbados, I was always around cricket. I began to take it seriously around the age of 10-12. After moving to England for my education, I progressed through Warwickshire and signed my first professional contract in 2021. Although a stress fracture hindered my progress, I returned stronger, received an England call-up, and eventually joined the team in Bengaluru.”
Speaking about the attention he receives, he remarked, “The spotlight can be amusing; life remains unchanged, but it’s a privilege to have people eager to watch you play. It’s surreal to think how many fans in India refer to me as Starboy.”
On adjusting to the IPL's demands, Bethell noted, “Upon joining RCB, I was eager to soak in the experience. Observing players like Virat and Rajat, and conversing with DK, I realized the game here is played at a much faster pace; aggression and bravery are essential.”
Discussing his observations of Virat Kohli, he said, “Watching Virat during chases teaches you the nuances of batting, particularly how to manage a chase and remain not out. It’s crucial to adapt your approach based on the match situation.”
Bethell also highlighted the cricket culture in India, stating, “People here are passionate about cricket and love discussing it. The hands-on approach and the wealth of information shared is remarkable, especially among young players.”
Commenting on the coaching staff, he added, “Andy is observant and speaks only when necessary, which makes you pay attention when he does. DK is adept at quickly identifying scoring opportunities.”
Regarding his mindset for the IPL, Bethell emphasized, “I aimed to improve upon last year. Regardless of how many matches you play, it’s about the desire to excel. This tournament is prestigious; if you don’t enhance your skills here, when will you?”
Recalling his experience playing before RCB fans, he said, “Walking out alongside Virat and hearing the crowd was exhilarating. It’s vital to remain fully focused.”
Head Coach Andy Flower praised Bethell’s potential, stating, “I first noticed Bethell during the Under-19 World Cup; he’s a talented batsman with flair. We targeted him immediately. He possesses a mature cricketing mindset and is not easily intimidated, a quality seen in top players.
“A crucial skill at this level is the ability to filter information effectively, and he excels at that. The IPL and RCB environment will greatly benefit him, and I anticipate great achievements from him. He’s prepared not just to compete but to thrive among the best.”
