Jacob Bethell Discusses RCB's Mindset Ahead of Crucial Match Against Mumbai Indians
RCB's Preparation for the Upcoming Clash
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 9: Jacob Bethell, a batter for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), shared insights on the team's mentality, his personal performance, and the overall confidence in the locker room as they gear up for a significant match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) this Sunday in Raipur.
Bethell expressed that batting alongside Virat Kohli is a remarkable experience, noting that Kohli's presence in the team is more comforting than stressful. He emphasized that having such a prominent player in the squad allows others to play more freely, as much of the focus and pressure tends to be directed towards the former Indian captain.
“It’s amazing. I’ve mentioned before how great it is to bat with him and be part of the team alongside him. I don’t feel any added pressure; it’s just reassuring to have someone of his caliber in the squad. You can rely on him, and often, the spotlight is on him, which alleviates some pressure from the rest of us. It’s not a burden; it actually helps you play more freely,” Bethell remarked.
Regarding RCB's transition from Bengaluru to Raipur, he stated, “This feels like our second home now. We received a warm welcome at the hotel, and the move to Raipur has been smooth. Today’s training will be crucial as we need to adapt quickly. Mumbai has had a few days here, but I don’t think that will significantly impact us. We are a confident team, and I believe we will adjust well.”
RCB, who played their initial five home matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, will now utilize the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur for their last two home games in IPL 2026 due to prior commitments.
Addressing the team’s strategy following consecutive losses, Bethell acknowledged, “We can’t ignore the fact that we’ve lost two matches in a row. We’ve reflected on those games and identified areas for improvement. However, what matters now is being focused for the first ball in the next match. If we can do that and adapt quickly, we have the potential to secure four points here.”
Bethell also discussed his individual performance, admitting that he hasn’t started the tournament as well as he had hoped. Nevertheless, he remains focused on making a significant impact in the upcoming game.
“I haven’t had the start I wanted in this tournament, but the only match that matters is the one tomorrow. I don’t feel like I’m fighting for a place; it’s more about my desire to contribute to the team. It’s frustrating not to be part of the wins, and I have a strong urge to deliver a match-winning performance tomorrow,” he stated.
On the choice between IPL and domestic cricket, Bethell defended his decision to prioritize the IPL, asserting that it is the right choice for his career. He described the IPL as the premier tournament featuring the world’s top players and expressed confidence that this experience will aid his development.
“Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and that’s perfectly fine. But from my perspective, I believe I’ve made the right choice. This is the marquee tournament of the year, showcasing nearly all the best cricketers globally. I don’t think it will harm my career; in fact, I believe it will benefit me,” he concluded.
As defending champions, RCB aims to recover from their recent defeats in the eagerly awaited match against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday, May 10, 2026, in Raipur.
