IPL 2027 Auction to Return to India Amid Controversy Over Impact Player Rule

New Delhi, Sep 16: The upcoming IPL players' auction for the 2027 season is scheduled to take place in India. League chairman Arun Dhumal expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event domestically after three consecutive years abroad.
The previous auctions were conducted in Dubai, Jeddah (for the mega auction), and Abu Dhabi.
Dhumal noted, "We aim to hold the auction in India each year, but the wedding season often complicates venue availability. This year, we are optimistic about securing a location since it will be a smaller auction." He is also expected to be re-elected as IPL chairman during the BCCI AGM on September 18.
The choice of the auction city will depend on the availability of the BCCI's preferred venue.
During a recent Governing Council meeting, the controversial Impact Player rule was a topic of discussion, with the BCCI seeking fresh input from teams regarding this regulation, which is set to remain in effect until 2027.
Notable players, including India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, former captain Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel, have voiced their concerns about the Impact Player rule, arguing that it undermines the significance of all-rounders.
Prior to IPL 2026, many team captains expressed their objections to the BCCI, leading to renewed calls for the rule's removal. Dhumal indicated that the BCCI is willing to reconsider the Impact Player concept.
"We are currently discussing the matter. We will gather feedback from all stakeholders before making a decision," Dhumal stated.
This strategic rule permits teams to make substitutions at any point during the match.
In addition to Dhumal, Khairul Majumdar is also set to be re-elected to the IPL Governing Council during the AGM this week.
