IPL 2026: RCB Set to Face SRH in Season Opener at Chinnaswamy Stadium
Excitement Builds for IPL 2026 Opener
In Bengaluru, Karnataka, preparations are underway for the highly anticipated opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Former Indian cricketer and current President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Venkatesh Prasad, met with Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, on Friday to discuss the upcoming event.
The IPL 2026 season is set to commence on March 28, featuring the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). After a period of uncertainty following a tragic incident on June 4, 2025, the Karnataka government has approved the hosting of IPL matches at this iconic venue.
Extensive renovations have been carried out at the stadium by KSCA, which include the installation of new entry gates, widening existing ones, and enhancing the surrounding infrastructure. Improvements also feature new walkways, a holding area adjacent to the former National Cricket Academy, and dedicated routes for emergency services.
These renovations commenced in mid-December following the KSCA elections, where Venkatesh Prasad was elected as president. The KSCA has worked closely with state authorities to ensure compliance with all necessary regulations.
Having secured their first IPL title last year, RCB enters the new season as a strong contender, while SRH is expected to provide a tough challenge with their powerful batting lineup, which includes stars like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, and Nitish Reddy.
RCB will depend on the seasoned talents of Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Jitesh Sharma as they aim to kick off their campaign with a victory. Both teams are eager to make a strong start in the tournament.
