IPL 2026 Playoff Race Heats Up: Insights from Irfan Pathan and Suresh Raina
Intense Competition for IPL 2026 Playoffs
The battle for playoff positions in IPL 2026 is becoming increasingly fierce. Currently, the Punjab Kings, last year's runners-up, are at the top of the points table with 13 points from nine matches, closely followed by the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who have secured 12 points.
As both teams strive to secure their playoff spots, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has expressed his belief that a new champion will emerge this season.
During his appearance on JioStar's 'TATA IPL: Out or Not Out', Pathan highlighted the potential for PBKS to clinch their first IPL title. He stated, “Punjab has a strong chance. They are playing impactful cricket and have a solid combination. If Cooper Connolly can contribute with the ball, which I believe is the missing piece in their bowling lineup, they will be in a great position. Their captain is exceptional, the opening pair is in fantastic form, and the bowling unit is also impressive.”
Pathan also mentioned that he sees potential in the Delhi Capitals, noting, “Delhi is a capable team. Their situation seems uncertain right now, but the match against Gujarat Titans was very close. Had they won that, they would have been on a winning streak. Lucknow has challenges ahead, but my focus is on Delhi and Punjab. If I had to choose, I would lean towards Punjab.”
IPL legend Suresh Raina shared his thoughts, suggesting that RCB could successfully defend their title. He remarked, “RCB's performance has been commendable, especially with Captain Rajat Patidar leading the bowling unit effectively. It’s not just about achieving high scores; each player in the batting lineup knows their role.”
Raina also expressed optimism for the Rajasthan Royals, predicting they could win their second title since 2008. He noted, “Rajasthan Royals are making significant strides, 18 years after their first championship. Their fearless opener, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, along with Jofra Archer and Ravi Bishnoi, are key players. It’s a youthful team, but they play an exciting brand of cricket.”
Additionally, Raina backed Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans to secure their second IPL trophy, stating, “The Gujarat Titans are hitting their stride at the right moment. Rashid Khan has performed well recently, and Shubman Gill is maintaining a high strike rate. However, I believe RCB has the best chance.”
