Ahead of the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the BCCI has introduced a new set of rules. The much-anticipated IPL 2024 is set to begin on Friday (March 22) in Chennai with a match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Under the new rules, a bowler will be able to bowl two bouncers in an over. Earlier, bowlers were allowed to bowl only one short ball in an over. The BCCI first introduced the two-bouncer rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) in the 2023–24 domestic season. In international cricket, bowlers cannot bowl more than one short delivery in an over.

New Rules in IPL 2024:
Apart from the two bouncers in the overrule, the BCCI has also decided to maintain the rule of scrutinizing catches when a referral for stumping is requested during IPL 2024 matches. In January this year, the ICC changed the rule and according to it, umpires now only assess side-on replays for stumping during Decision Review System (DRS) referrals, not the possibility of a catch-bound dismissal.

In addition to retaining two reviews, teams will also have the option of reviewing wides and no balls. A rule allowing teams to review wides and no-balls was introduced last year. Apart from that, the IPL also introduced the impact player rule last year.

In another big call, the BCCI has decided against implementing the ICC's new stop clock rule. To ensure that the games are completed on time, the ICC has introduced a rule for white ball games. According to the new rule, the bowling team has to start the new over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over.

IPL 2024 will also see the introduction of a smart replay system. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the TV umpire will receive input directly from two Hawk-Eye operators who will sit in the same room as the umpire and provide them with images captured across the ground by Hawk-Eye's eight high-speed cameras.
