Mumbai Indians Captain Penalized for Over-Rate Violation

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], March 30: Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), has been penalized with a fine of INR 12 lakh due to a slow over-rate during their match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, as reported by a sports news outlet.

This match marked MI's second game of the season, resulting in their second consecutive loss. It was also Hardik's first appearance this season after serving a suspension for the team's slow over-rate in their last match of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Fortunately for MI and Hardik, the IPL has revised its penalties, eliminating bans for repeated slow over-rate offenses. Now, teams face financial penalties and fielding restrictions instead.

This incident was the first slow over-rate fine of IPL 2025, occurring after the ninth match of the tournament.

MI, featuring a pace-dominant bowling lineup including Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Satyanarayana Raju, and Hardik himself, failed to complete their overs within the allotted time.

In the match, MI won the toss and chose to bowl first.

GT's openers, Shubman Gill (38 runs off 27 balls, including four boundaries and a six) and Sai Sudarshan, provided a strong start with a partnership of 78 runs. Another significant partnership developed between Sudarshan and Jos Buttler (39 runs off 24 balls, with five fours and a six). Sudarshan delivered an impressive performance, scoring 63 runs off 41 balls, featuring four boundaries and two sixes. Despite reaching 179/4, GT faced a minor collapse, finishing at 196/8 after 20 overs.

For MI, Hardik Pandya (2/29) was the standout bowler, while Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Satyanarayana Raju each claimed a wicket.

In their pursuit of 197 runs, MI lost early wickets, including Rohit Sharma (8) and Ryan Rickelton. However, Tilak Varma (39 runs off 36 balls, with three fours and a six) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 runs off 28 balls, with one four and four sixes) formed a 62-run partnership. After their dismissals, MI struggled and ended their innings at 160/6 in 20 overs.

Prasidh Krishna (2/18) and Mohammed Siraj (2/34) were the leading bowlers for GT, with Kagiso Rabada and Sai Kishore also contributing with a wicket each.
