Gujarat Titans' Shubman Gill Reflects on IPL Final Loss and Future Improvements
Gujarat Titans' Journey in IPL 2023
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 1: After the Gujarat Titans (GT) faced defeat in the IPL final, captain Shubman Gill expressed that a target of 180-190 runs could have secured victory. He acknowledged the team's impressive performance throughout the season, reaching the finals for the second time in five years.
Despite their strong season, the Titans struggled in the final match, with their top three batsmen—Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler—failing to deliver, which put them at a disadvantage early on. Although the GT bowlers fought valiantly to defend a total of 156 runs, it ultimately fell short as Virat Kohli's stellar 75 runs off 42 balls led his team to a successful title defense.
In his post-match comments, Gill noted, "If we had managed to score around 180 or 190, it would have made for a competitive match. Regarding the pitch conditions, there was minimal impact. We typically see some movement for fast bowlers in the initial overs. Losing early wickets disrupted our momentum, but we remained hopeful, knowing that with a couple of early breakthroughs, we could stay in the game even with a score of 150 or 160."
Gill also reflected on the team's inability to clinch the title, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement. He stated, "We consistently pushed ourselves to enhance various aspects of our game, focusing on those small 5 percent improvements. Although we didn't win, there are always areas to refine. Even if we had lifted the trophy, we would still identify aspects to work on as a team."
Batting first after being put in by RCB, GT managed to score only 155 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Washington Sundar was the standout performer with the bat, scoring 50 runs off 37 balls, while Nishant Sindhu contributed 20 runs. The RCB bowlers, including Rasikh Dar Salam (3/27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29), and Josh Hazlewood (2/37), consistently took wickets.
RCB began their innings strongly, with a 62-run partnership between Venkatesh Iyer (32 runs off 16 balls) and Virat Kohli. Although GT fought back, reducing RCB to 132/5, Kohli's unbeaten 75 runs ensured RCB's victory with two overs to spare.
This win marks RCB's second IPL title and their fourth overall in Indian franchise cricket, which includes two Women's Premier League (WPL) titles.
