Gujarat Titans Face Challenges in IPL 2026 Opener

Chandigarh [India], April 1: Following their defeat in the IPL 2026 opener against last season's finalists, Punjab Kings, Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer and now a broadcaster, has emphasized the necessity for Gujarat Titans' top three batsmen to step up their game.

While discussing the Titans' performance on Star Sports, Chopra remarked, "The top three for Gujarat Titans must perform better as they are not allowing themselves the chance to explore alternative strategies. Surprisingly, Glenn Phillips' score of 25 is his highest in IPL history so far."

After Punjab Kings opted to bowl first on Tuesday night, they successfully limited Gujarat Titans to 162 runs for 6 wickets in their 20 overs, thanks to impressive bowling from Marco Jansen, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Vijaykumar Vyshak. None of the Gujarat batsmen managed to score over 50 runs.

Chopra pointed out that both Phillips and Washington Sundar need to improve their scoring rates. "We expect Phillips to contribute more consistently, and Washington Sundar must also increase his scoring pace, as he appeared somewhat hesitant. While Shahrukh Khan remains in the lineup, I believe Kumar Kushagra also deserved a chance to play," he added.

On the other hand, Punjab's batting lineup faced a moment of tension, but Cooper Connolly's unbeaten 72 runs led them to a three-wicket victory.

Chopra also critiqued the captaincy of Shubman Gill, stating that his leadership left much to be desired. "Gujarat Titans need to reconsider the structure of their batting order at positions 4, 5, and 6. The bowling strategies were also confusing; Siraj had two overs remaining when the match was nearly over, and Prasidh Krishna was introduced quite late. Overall, Shubman Gill's captaincy could use improvement," he noted.

Looking ahead, the Gujarat Titans are set to host the Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday, while the Punjab Kings will face the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
