Gujarat Titans' Struggles in Key Overs

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], April 25: Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), expressed disappointment over the team's failure to secure boundaries during the critical 17th, 18th, and 19th overs in their recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026. This shortfall contributed to their five-wicket defeat.

GT batted first, scoring 205 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allotted 20 overs, with Sai Sudharsan shining brightly with a remarkable century, scoring 100 runs off 58 balls. At one point, they seemed poised to reach a total between 220 and 230, having amassed 170 runs for two wickets after 16 overs. However, they only managed to add 15 runs in the 16th over, losing Sudharsan in the process.

RCB's bowlers, including Suyash Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Josh Hazlewood, effectively tightened their grip, allowing no boundaries in the subsequent three overs and limiting GT to just 17 runs off 18 balls. Although GT managed a late surge of 18 runs in the final over, they still fell short of their anticipated total.

During the post-match presentation, Gill reflected on the lost momentum during the crucial overs, stating, “From the 16th to the 19th overs, we couldn’t find the boundaries and didn’t score as many runs as we hoped. Those overs were vital for us.”

With the ball, GT initially restricted RCB to 58 runs for one wicket in the first six overs. However, they struggled to maintain that control as Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal formed a formidable partnership, scoring 115 runs off just 59 balls, which set the stage for RCB's victory. Kohli was the standout performer, earning the Player of the Match award with a stellar 81 runs off 44 balls, while Padikkal contributed a quick 55 runs from 27 balls.

Gill noted that despite a strong start after the powerplay, the team failed to capitalize on key wicket opportunities during the middle overs. “We were in a good position at the end of the powerplay, but we couldn’t take wickets in the middle overs,” he remarked.

Interestingly, Kohli was given a second chance early in his innings when Washington Sundar dropped a straightforward catch off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling while Kohli was still on zero. Gill acknowledged the impact of that missed opportunity, emphasizing the importance of overcoming such setbacks. He admitted that GT struggled with consistency against length deliveries and commended RCB for their effective batting during the middle overs.

“When a batsman is dropped on nought, it’s tough for the fielder, but it’s crucial to bounce back. We had our chances, but we couldn’t consistently handle the length balls. They batted exceptionally well in the middle overs,” Gill added.

In the match, despite an early loss with Jacob Bethell's wicket, Kohli and Padikkal's partnership stabilized the chase. RCB faced a brief wobble in the middle overs as Rashid Khan and Manav Suthar took wickets, bringing GT back into contention. However, Krunal Pandya's late innings of 23 runs off 12 balls, including 15 runs in the 18th over, helped secure the win, with RCB reaching 206 runs for the loss of five wickets with seven balls remaining.

Earlier, GT's innings was bolstered by Sudharsan's century, but RCB's bowlers, particularly Josh Hazlewood, managed to rein in the scoring during the death overs, preventing GT from surpassing 220 runs, although they still achieved a total over 200 thanks to a late flourish from Jason Holder.
