Gujarat Titans Face Heavy Defeat Against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026
Gujarat Titans' Struggles in IPL 2026 Match
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 20: Following a significant 99-run loss to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2026 match, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill acknowledged that his team allowed too many runs during the middle overs and did not effectively implement their strategies.
In his post-match comments, Gill noted that despite understanding the pitch conditions, Gujarat failed to limit MI to a manageable score.
“To be honest, we conceded too many runs in the middle overs. On a pitch like that, a score of 160-170 should have been our target. However, there are valuable lessons for us to take from this match,” Gill stated.
The defeat marked GT's largest loss margin in IPL history, surpassing their previous record of an 83-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings in 2025 and a 63-run loss to CSK in 2024, according to CricViz data.
“It’s just a minor setback, but we have a few away games coming up, and I’m hopeful we can return to winning ways,” he added.
Gill highlighted the inconsistent performance of the bowlers, especially during the middle overs, where they struggled to apply pressure on MI's batsmen.
“The pitch was somewhat slow. We didn’t consistently hit the right lengths. Some balls were coming onto the bat well, while others were not, and some kept low. We needed to maintain that length more consistently in the middle overs,” he explained.
When asked about any changes in conditions during the second innings, Gill felt the pitch remained largely the same, possibly becoming slightly easier due to dew.
“It seemed pretty similar. If anything, it might have improved a bit because there was more dew while we were batting,” he noted.
MI showcased a commanding performance, defeating Gujarat by 99 runs. Batting first, MI scored 199/5, with Tilak Varma achieving his maiden IPL century, scoring an impressive 101 off just 45 balls. Despite losing early wickets, MI made a strong recovery in the death overs.
In response, Gujarat struggled significantly, facing a top-order collapse that saw Sai Sudharsan dismissed for a golden duck, leaving them at 45/3 within six overs.
The innings fell apart as Ashwani Kumar (4/24), Mitchell Santner (2/16), and AM Ghazanfar (2/17) dismantled the batting order, bowling Gujarat out for just 100 runs.
With this victory, Mumbai climbed to seventh place in the IPL 2026 standings, achieving two wins out of six matches, totaling four points with a Net Run Rate of +0.067.
Conversely, Gujarat dropped to sixth place with three wins and three losses from six games, remaining on six points but with a Net Run Rate of -0.821.
