Gujarat Titans' Coach Highlights Catching Errors After Loss to KKR
Post-Match Insights from Gujarat Titans' Assistant Coach
In Kolkata, following a defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Parthiv Patel, the assistant coach of Gujarat Titans (GT), emphasized that "dropped catches significantly impacted the game" and stressed the necessity of capitalizing on every chance in crucial matches.
KKR is still in contention for a playoff spot, thanks to remarkable performances from Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and Cameron Green, who propelled KKR to a 29-run victory after setting a daunting target of 248 runs. If KKR wins their last two matches and other results favor them, they could still make the playoffs, while the 2022 champions await clarity on their top-four placement.
Finn Allen, who scored 93 runs, was dropped twice by Mohammed Siraj and Jason Holder, which allowed him to set the stage for Raghuvanshi and Green to attack the GT bowlers.
During the post-match press conference, Parthiv remarked, "Catching is crucial, especially in high-scoring matches against skilled batsmen. Opportunities are rare, and when they arise, they must be seized. That was the key difference today."
GT's chase was hampered when opener Sai Sudharsan had to retire hurt early, disrupting his strong partnership with Shubman Gill, who took time to find his rhythm.
Despite returning later to score a half-century, the early struggles of Gill and Jos Buttler had already taken a toll on the team's momentum.
When asked about Sudharsan's batting position, Parthiv stated, "Sai Sudharsan can definitely play; he may not seem like it, but he strikes the ball well." He added that there are "no issues with Sudharsan's strike rate, and he is capable of batting effectively both at the top and during the slog overs."
GT's next match is against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 21, and with several matches still to play, the IPL points table could see significant changes, although GT currently sits in second place.
Parthiv concluded by saying, "We need not concern ourselves with other results. Our fate is in our hands; winning our next game guarantees qualification. It's that straightforward."
In the match, GT chose to bowl first, and KKR capitalized on this decision. After an early dismissal of skipper Rahane (14), Allen (93 off 35 balls, including four boundaries and ten sixes) and Raghuvanshi formed a formidable partnership, scoring 95 runs together. Following Allen's exit, Raghuvanshi reached his fifth fifty of the season, contributing to a 108-run partnership with Cameron Green (52* off 28 balls, with three fours and four sixes), leading KKR to a total of 247/2 in 20 overs. Raghuvanshi finished with an unbeaten 82* off 44 balls, hitting four boundaries and seven sixes.
Siraj and Sai Kishore each took a wicket for GT.
During the chase, Sudharsan's early retirement was a setback. However, skipper Shubman Gill (85 off 49 balls, with five fours and seven sixes) and Jos Buttler (57 off 35 balls, with five fours and two sixes) formed a 128-run partnership that kept GT in contention. Unfortunately, after their dismissals, GT struggled to maintain the required run rate, finishing at 218/4 in 20 overs.
Sunil Narine (2/29) was the standout bowler for KKR and earned the 'Player of the Match' accolade.
Currently, GT holds second place with eight wins and five losses, totaling 16 points, while KKR is in seventh place with five wins, six losses, and one no result, accumulating 11 points.
