Finn Allen's Century Powers KKR to Victory Over DC in IPL Clash
Finn Allen Shines with a Century for KKR
New Delhi [India] - May 9: After delivering a match-winning century for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), opener Finn Allen expressed his satisfaction with his performance, noting that he aimed to back himself to bat for at least 40 balls. His absence from a few matches provided him with a fresh perspective.
Returning to the field, the New Zealand batsman showcased his formidable skills against the Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium, scoring an impressive 100* off just 47 balls, successfully chasing down the target of 143 set by DC. This victory marked the fifth consecutive home defeat for the Capitals. Despite a rocky start with six matches without a win, KKR remains in contention for the playoffs, having secured four consecutive victories.
After struggling with low scores earlier in the season, Allen had to sit out three matches in favor of his fellow Kiwi, Tim Seifert. Following a modest score of 29 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he finally made a significant impact.
In his post-match interview, Allen emphasized his commitment to expanding his batting skills. He stated, “I have been working on having more strings in my bow. I needed to be more responsible after losing a couple of early wickets. I focused on settling in early; it was tough at the start. Axar (Patel) bowled well early on. The plan was to establish a solid position and bat deep. My approach is to endure tough situations and give myself a chance. I’ve had a few starts, and while it’s frustrating not to convert them, it’s nice to achieve personal success. When you’re in the moment, you forget about your individual performance and concentrate on the situation. I knew that if I could bat for 40 balls, I would score enough runs. Sometimes, being sidelined offers a new perspective and allows for mental rejuvenation. I was putting too much pressure on myself,” he explained.
In the match, KKR won the toss and chose to field first. After a solid 49-run partnership between Pathum Nissanka (50 runs off 29 balls, including five fours and three sixes) and KL Rahul, DC found themselves in trouble at 89/5, with Anukul Roy (2/31 in four overs) disrupting their middle order. Spinners Varun Chakravarthy (0/28) and Sunil Narine (1/17) applied significant pressure during the middle overs, while Kartik Tyagi claimed two vital wickets for 25 runs. Ashutosh Sharma (39 runs off 28 balls, with three fours and two sixes) helped DC reach 142/8 in their 20 overs.
During the chase, KKR faced early setbacks, losing openers Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, leaving them at 31/2. However, a remarkable 116-run partnership between Allen and Cam Green (33* off 27 balls, with two sixes) propelled KKR to victory in just 14.2 overs, finishing with eight wickets in hand.
With this win, KKR has moved up to seventh place, keeping their playoff hopes alive with four consecutive victories. In contrast, DC has dropped to eighth, enduring their fifth straight home loss and seventh overall this season, effectively eliminating their playoff chances.
