Finn Allen Shines as KKR Defeats GT to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
KKR's Victory Over GT: A Game-Changer
Kolkata (West Bengal) - After securing a victory against the Gujarat Titans (GT), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batsman Finn Allen shared insights about batting at Eden Gardens, emphasizing that the pitch rewards players who can manage the initial seam movement and bounce effectively.
With impressive performances from Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Cameron Green, and a stellar bowling display, KKR triumphed over GT by 29 runs, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. Allen, who previously scored a century against Delhi Capitals (DC), delivered a remarkable innings of 93 runs off just 35 balls, featuring four boundaries and ten sixes.
In the post-match press conference, Allen remarked on the Kolkata pitch, stating, "The wickets might not have been as flat as I anticipated initially, but they do reward good cricket. If you position yourself well early on and handle the seam movement and bounce, you will be rewarded. The atmosphere here is fantastic, and I’m really enjoying playing with this great group of guys."
Throughout the tournament, Allen has accumulated 321 runs in nine matches, averaging 40.12 with a striking rate of 221.37, including one century and one fifty. He has hit 28 fours and 27 sixes from 145 balls faced, achieving a boundary every 2.6 balls.
Allen acknowledged the challenging conditions at the start, noting that GT had two of the tournament's top bowlers, Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, bowling during the powerplay. He explained, "My strategy was to capitalize on the balls I could score from and to rotate the strike when necessary to avoid unnecessary risks. After Jinx (Ajinkya Rahane) got out, I realized I needed to take on more responsibility and stay at the crease longer."
Discussing his batting approach, he mentioned that he aims to hit any ball that is in his range while also focusing on rotating the strike. He is continuously working on improving his weaknesses, stating, "I’m trying to position myself better to enhance my consistency, which helps me deal with movement and swing off the wicket. Keeping things simple is my goal."
In the match, GT chose to bowl first, and KKR capitalized on this decision. After Rahane (14) was dismissed early, Allen (93 off 35 balls, with four boundaries and ten sixes) and Raghuvanshi formed a formidable partnership, scoring 95 runs together. Following Allen's exit, Raghuvanshi achieved his fifth fifty of the season, contributing to a significant 108-run partnership with Cameron Green (52* off 28 balls, with three fours and four sixes), leading KKR to a total of 247/2 in 20 overs. Raghuvanshi finished with an unbeaten 82* off 44 balls, including four boundaries and seven sixes.
Siraj and Sai Kishore each took a wicket for GT.
During GT's chase, Sai Sudharsan had to retire hurt early on. Skipper Shubman Gill (85 off 49 balls, with five fours and seven sixes) and Jos Buttler (57 off 35 balls, with five fours and two sixes) formed a 128-run partnership, keeping GT in contention. However, after their dismissals, GT struggled to maintain the required run rate, concluding their innings at 218/4 in 20 overs.
Sunil Narine (2/29) was the standout bowler for KKR and earned the 'Player of the Match' title.
Currently, GT holds the second position with eight wins and five losses, totaling 16 points, while KKR sits in seventh place with five wins, six losses, and one no result, accumulating 11 points.
