Du Plessis Stands by Team After IPL Defeat

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - On May 22, Delhi Capitals' captain Faf du Plessis expressed his support for his team following a disappointing defeat to the Mumbai Indians in the 63rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

In this encounter, the Delhi Capitals were bowled out for just 121 runs, thanks to a stellar performance from Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner, who each took three wickets, leading to a 59-run victory for the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium.

This victory secured the Mumbai Indians a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs, joining the Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings.

During the post-match presentation, Du Plessis praised his team's fielding efforts, stating, “We were excellent today in the field. The guys showed great fight. The bowlers did well, although the pitch made it a bit easier for them. We had a strong batting lineup, but we lost momentum in the last two overs, which was crucial.”

He also highlighted the performance of young Indian batter Sameer Rizvi, who scored 39 runs, showcasing his talent on a challenging pitch where many senior players struggled. Du Plessis remarked, “Rizvi showed promise today. Against a strong team, you need to be at your best, and while we performed well for most of the match, we faltered in the final overs.”

Du Plessis noted the absence of regular captain Axar Patel, who was ill, and left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, who opted out of the match. He emphasized the impact of their absence, particularly Patel's skills as a spinner on such a pitch, stating, “Axar is a proven international bowler, and on a wicket like this, he would have thrived. Unfortunately, he was unwell.”

In conclusion, Du Plessis stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in cricket, saying, “When you're riding high, you must ensure you don't lose that advantage quickly.”
