Exciting Kickoff for ISL 2026-27 Season with Bengaluru FC and FC Goa Matches
ISL 2026-27 Season Launches with Thrilling Matches
The Indian Super League (ISL) for the 2026-27 season is set to commence this Saturday, featuring two captivating matches. Bengaluru FC will face off against Sporting Club Delhi at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, while FC Goa will host Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.
With new players, revamped rosters, and fresh ambitions, the opening day is expected to provide an early insight into each team's goals for the season.
The return of the full home-and-away round-robin format adds extra importance to this season, as clubs aim to gain early momentum and leverage their home advantage, as noted in an ISL press release.
Bengaluru FC is eager to kick off their season with a victory in front of their home crowd against Sporting Club Delhi at 5 PM. The Blues are looking to build on their previous 2-0 win over Delhi, where Sivasakthi Narayanan and Sunil Chhetri scored. Meanwhile, the visitors are keen to make a strong impression.
Head Coach Pep Muñoz has emphasized the need to manage player fitness after a rigorous pre-season and the recent international break. Key players like Ryan Williams, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Ashique Kuruniyan have returned from national duty, and Muñoz has highlighted the importance of careful workload management.
“We must take care of our players,” Muñoz stated, mentioning that Williams' participation will depend on his recovery. Despite fitness concerns, the Bengaluru coach is confident in his squad's depth, with midfielder Suresh Wangjam entering his eighth season with the team. Muñoz also stressed the need for results that reflect Bengaluru FC's identity through entertaining football.
The hosts have bolstered their squad with several international signings, including defenders Menno Koch and Sandro Embalo, midfielders Borja Martinez and Manuel de Iriondo, and Montenegrin striker Mihailo Perovic. These new players are expected to help fill the void left by Rahul Bheke's transfer to Mohun Bagan SG.
Sporting Club Delhi arrives with match fitness from the Durand Cup and boasts a youthful squad averaging 24.3 years. Head Coach Tomasz Tchórz aims to build on last season's experiences, focusing on continuity, high-tempo pressing, and the development of young Indian talent. Brazilian forward Rodriguinho, who netted seven goals during Delhi's Durand Cup semi-final run, is a player to watch.
Midfielder Lalrinliana Hnamte expressed the team's ambition ahead of the opener, stating, “We are very young but we are hungry for the trophy.”
At 7:30 PM, FC Goa will renew their rivalry with Chennaiyin FC in Fatorda, with both teams eager to start the season on a high note under familiar faces in new coaching roles. FC Goa's Head Coach Gouramangi Singh and Chennaiyin FC's Head Coach Clifford Miranda, former teammates at both the national level and Dempo, will kick off their respective campaigns in this competitive match.
FC Goa has welcomed back Jorge Ortiz, who previously enjoyed a successful stint with the club, while Spanish midfielder Álex Vallejo and winger Isak Vanlalruatfela add depth to the squad. Singh aims to establish his tactical approach from the start, focusing on clarity, control, and competitiveness.
“As a club, we want to stay true to our identity of being a competitive team. We want to play with a lot more clarity. We want to control games and be comfortable with and without the ball,” Singh remarked ahead of the match.
Chennaiyin FC, who finished 13th last season, have strengthened their Indian roster with Ayush Dev Chhetri and Brison Fernandes, while Glan Martins joins from FC Goa. French attacking midfielder Madih Talal and Brazilian forward Ramon Tanque further enhance the Marina Machans' attacking options.
Miranda has emphasized that consistency throughout the season will be more crucial than the outcome of any single match. “Beating Goa won’t win us the league, and losing to Goa won’t lose us the league. It’s about being consistent over the 24 games,” he stated.
The last encounter between the teams ended in a 1-1 draw in Chennai, with Sandesh Jhingan scoring a late equalizer after Irfan Yadwad had opened the scoring. While the upcoming match carries added intrigue with former teammates now on opposing sides, Singh insists the focus should remain on the teams rather than the coaches.
“Saturday isn’t about Gouramangi and Clifford. It is about FC Goa and Chennaiyin — two very good teams, and we’re going to have a competitive game,” he said.
With both clubs introducing new talent and aiming to set the tone for their seasons, the clash at Fatorda promises to be an exciting start to the campaign.
Bengaluru FC will host Sporting Club Delhi at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium at 5:00 PM IST, while FC Goa will face Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda at 7:30 PM IST on Saturday.
