Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 1: The T20 Mumbai League kicked off with a bang as the Eagle Thane Strikers showcased their prowess, securing a commanding nine-wicket victory against the Bandra Blasters at Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
The highlight of the match was an outstanding unbeaten century by Shashwat Jagtap, which played a crucial role in the Strikers' triumph.
Rohit Sharma, the league's ambassador, was present for the toss of the second match featuring Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs. He was accompanied by Ajinkya Naik, President of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), and Rajdip Gupta, Chairman of the League Governing Council, along with other MCA Apex Council members.
Chasing a formidable target of 190 runs, the Strikers made the chase look effortless, with Shashwat and Impact Player Sumeir Zaveri forming a spectacular opening partnership that left the Blasters struggling. They amassed 93 runs during the Powerplay, dominating the game with aggressive batting.
Both players reached their half-centuries quickly, maintaining the Strikers' stronghold on the match.
The opening duo put together a remarkable 155-run partnership before Sumeir was dismissed after scoring a brilliant 80 runs off just 36 balls, which included 11 fours and four sixes.
Shashwat, however, remained at the crease, finishing with a magnificent century off only 50 balls, leading the Eagle Thane Strikers to a comfortable victory and a strong start in this prominent domestic T20 tournament.
Earlier, the Bandra Blasters managed to recover from a shaky beginning to post a total of 189/9. The Strikers opted to field first and struck early, with skipper Shardul Thakur dismissing Prateekkumar Ravishankar for a duck.
Captain Suved Parkar (30) and Parag Khanapurkar (16) steadied the innings with a 45-run partnership before a mix-up led to Parag's dismissal.
Atharva Ankolekar further weakened the Blasters' innings by taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries, while Dhrumil Matkar provided a late boost, remaining not out on 28 off 17 balls, helping the Blasters reach a competitive score.
Later in the day, the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals will face off against Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs in the second match of the men's tournament.
On Tuesday, the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women’s League will commence, marking a new chapter in the league's history, with SOBO Mumbai Falcons taking on Thane Sky Risers in the first-ever match, starting at 9:30 am.
