A Call for National Unity

In a heartfelt message, Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, addressed the national football team ahead of their critical FIFA World Cup match against Uzbekistan in Atlanta. He emphasized that this event transcends mere sport, describing it as a "moment of national unity" and urged the citizens to rally behind the team to secure a victory.

The Congolese team had previously drawn 1-1 with Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, which provided a glimmer of hope for their campaign. However, they faced a setback in their next match against Colombia, the current group leaders. If Portugal falters in their final group match against Colombia and DR Congo manages to win, they could still qualify for the knockout stage.

On Saturday, the President shared a message on his social media, stating, "This match is not just about football; it is a time for our nation to unite, to share the same passion, hope, and love for our flag."

He reassured the players that they would not be alone on the field, saying, "On June 27, 2026, in Atlanta, you will have the support of over 100 million Congolese—our families, youth, elders, provinces, diaspora, supporters, soldiers, workers, and children—all standing together for you."

Tshisekedi concluded his message by calling on all Congolese to come together in unity, passion, and responsibility to support their team, the Leopards, towards the victory they all aspire to achieve.

Historic World Cup Participation

This tournament marks a significant milestone for DR Congo, as it is their first appearance in the FIFA World Cup since 1974, when they were known as Zaire and unfortunately lost all their matches.
