Delhi Capitals Triumph Over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 Opener
Delhi Capitals Secure Victory Against Mumbai Indians
In a thrilling encounter, Sameer Rizvi showcased his exceptional talent with a remarkable half-century, leading the Delhi Capitals to a six-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians in their inaugural home match of the 2026 IPL season on Saturday.
Chasing a target of 163 runs, the 22-year-old Rizvi scored an impressive 90 runs off just 51 deliveries, dismantling the MI bowling attack with a display that included seven boundaries and an equal number of sixes.
After a shaky start in the top order for the second consecutive match, the Capitals found stability through a crucial 66-run partnership for the third wicket between Rizvi and Pathum Nissanka, who contributed 44 runs from 30 balls.
Rizvi then formed a solid 78-run alliance with David Miller (17 not out), helping the team complete the chase with 11 balls remaining.
Initially supporting Nissanka, Rizvi shifted gears following the Sri Lankan's dismissal, confidently attacking the bowlers.
He unleashed a flurry of runs, hitting back-to-back fours followed by two massive sixes, including one that soared over deep backward point, amassing 20 runs in the 11th over bowled by Corbin Bosch.
Continuing his aggressive approach, Rizvi struck consecutive sixes off Mayank Markande, asserting dominance in the chase.
Though he narrowly missed out on his maiden IPL century, the crowd gave him a standing ovation as Bosch eventually claimed his wicket.
Earlier, the Delhi bowlers excelled, limiting the Mumbai Indians to a modest total of 162 for six, despite a steady half-century from stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Suryakumar anchored the innings with a composed 51 runs off 36 balls, including three fours and two sixes, while Rohit Sharma added 35 runs, as other MI batsmen struggled to find their rhythm.
The Delhi bowlers maintained tight control throughout the innings.
Captain Axar Patel was outstanding, conceding only 22 runs in his four overs and taking the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma.
Leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam (1/24 in 3 overs) contributed with a wicket, while Kuldeep Yadav (0/31 in 3 overs) was slightly more expensive.
The pace trio of Mukesh Kumar (2/26), Lungi Ngidi (1/34), and T Natarajan (1/24) collectively claimed four wickets.
Mukesh made an early impact by dismissing the in-form Ryan Rickelton with a well-placed delivery that was caught by Axar at mid-off.
Just two balls later, he took a return catch to send Tilak Varma back to the pavilion for a duck, leaving the Mumbai Indians in a precarious position early in the powerplay.
Rohit (35) and Suryakumar then steadied the innings with a 53-run partnership.
Rohit initiated the scoring with the first six of the match, sending an overpitched delivery from Nigam over long-on, while Suryakumar followed suit with a maximum on the next ball.
However, the Delhi spinners soon tightened their grip. Axar dismissed Rohit, who mistimed a shot to the cover area, where Nitish Rana took a superb catch.
Vipraj then removed Sherfane Rutherford (5), with Mukesh taking a fine catch near the boundary.
Suryakumar, leading in the absence of Hardik Pandya, attempted to accelerate alongside Naman Dhir (28) as Mumbai crossed the 100-run mark. The duo targeted wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, scoring 15 runs in the 15th over, including two sixes.
However, shortly after reaching his fifty, Suryakumar was trapped leg-before by Ngidi, who cleverly altered the pace of his delivery.
Death-over specialist Natarajan then dismissed Naman as MI continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.
