Fielding Errors Cost Delhi Capitals in IPL Match

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - April 12: Axar Patel, the captain of Delhi Capitals (DC), expressed that mistakes in fielding significantly impacted his team's performance, leading to a 23-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during their IPL 2026 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

"We started well, but during the chase, we lost two or three wickets quickly after the power play, which disrupted our momentum. The fielding errors were pivotal in changing the game for us. Notably, whenever we lost wickets, they fell in pairs, making it increasingly challenging for us. The wickets fell in clusters, which affected our rhythm," Patel stated in the post-match interview.

He acknowledged the bowlers' efforts in limiting CSK to around 215 runs but pointed out that dropped catches hindered their chase.

"The batsmen did reasonably well, but our fielding was disappointing. Chasing a target of 213-215 was achievable. I commend the bowlers for their performance in restricting the opposition to around 215-217. It was a good batting surface. However, had we not dropped a couple of catches, the outcome might have been different. (Did the pitch slow down?) No, nothing really changed. It may have been tougher for them due to the dew, and they bowled effectively," Patel added.

CSK, the five-time champions, celebrated their first victory of the season, breaking a six-match losing streak at Chepauk Stadium with a 23-run win over the Capitals.

The match featured an outstanding unbeaten century from Sanju Samson and a remarkable four-wicket haul by Jamie Overton, who dismantled the DC batting order.

After being asked to bat first, CSK's captain Gaikwad was out for 15 runs, but Samson propelled the innings forward alongside Ayush Mhatre, who provided crucial support. Samson reached his half-century in just 26 balls and finished with an impressive 115 runs off 56 deliveries, including 15 fours and four sixes. Mhatre contributed a brisk 59 runs off 36 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes, before retiring at the end of the innings. CSK concluded their innings with a formidable total of 212/2 in 20 overs, with Shivam Dube adding a quick 20 not out.

In response, DC started strong with Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul forming a 62-run partnership. However, they lost wickets in clusters, disrupting their momentum.

Jamie Overton spearheaded the CSK bowling attack, claiming 4 wickets for just 18 runs, while Anshul Kamboj took 3 wickets for 35 runs. Despite a commendable effort from Tristan Stubbs, who scored 60 runs off 30 balls, DC continued to lose wickets at critical moments, ultimately getting bowled out for 189 runs in 20 overs.

With this victory, CSK climbed to ninth place in the points table with one win and three losses, while DC remained in fourth place with two wins and two losses.
