New Delhi [India], March 6: As the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Hemang Badani has shared his enthusiasm regarding the team's pace attack, which features Jammu and Kashmir's rising star Aquib Nabi Dar alongside Australian cricket icon Mitchell Starc. Badani praised Nabi for his dedication to red-ball cricket, especially after his impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy.
Nabi earned the title of 'Player of the Series' in the recent Ranji Trophy, claiming 60 wickets across 10 matches with an outstanding average of 12.56. His achievements included two four-wicket hauls, seven five-wicket hauls, and remarkable best figures of 7/24, along with contributing 245 runs with the bat.
In an interview, Badani expressed his excitement about having Aquib and Starc leading the pace attack, stating, "I am incredibly thrilled! It's rewarding to see the hard work Aquib has put in pay off, culminating in a historic cup win for his team. We recognized his talent early on and included him in our camp last June. I advised him to avoid other teams' scouting to keep his potential under wraps."
Badani further emphasized Aquib's exceptional performances during the Ranji Trophy knockout stages, labeling him a "special talent" who consistently gives his all. He remarked, "Aquib enjoys bowling and is eager to keep running in. Unlike many younger bowlers who shy away from the demanding four-day format, he thrives on it. His commitment is refreshing in today's cricket landscape, and I look forward to collaborating with someone who possesses such strong work ethics."
Nabi proved crucial during the knockout rounds, earning 'Player of the Match' honors in the quarterfinal against Madhya Pradesh with a 12-wicket haul, including a seven-wicket performance. He continued to shine in the semifinal against Bengal, where he took nine wickets and scored a valuable 42 runs.
Regarding KL Rahul's batting position, whether he will open or play in the middle order as he does for India in ODIs, Badani mentioned, "It's still a topic of discussion. We haven't reached a conclusion yet, but we expect to clarify this in the coming week."
DC's batting lineup also boasts several finishers, including South African star Tristan Stubbs, uncapped Indian talent Ashutosh Sharma, and the newly acquired David Miller.
Badani discussed the challenge of selecting four overseas players, stating, "Every team faces the dilemma of choosing just four overseas players. It requires careful consideration of the opposition bowlers and which overseas players will provide the most value on any given day. Our decisions will be made game by game."
Reflecting on DC's fifth-place finish last season, where they began with five consecutive wins but faltered later, Badani noted that they were just one win away from playoff qualification. He remains optimistic about this year's squad, expressing hope for a successful season and aiming for the team's first IPL title.
