Delhi Capitals' Axar Patel Reflects on Missed Chances in IPL Loss to Punjab Kings
Axar Patel's Take on the Defeat
New Delhi, April 25: Following a disappointing six-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2026, Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel expressed regret over the team's dropped catches, stating they "deserved to lose" after scoring an impressive 264 runs in their innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Punjab Kings achieved a remarkable feat by successfully chasing down 265 runs, marking the highest successful chase in T20 history. The explosive opening partnership of Prabhsimran Singh, who scored 76 runs off just 26 balls, and Priyansh Arya, who added 43 runs off 17 balls, set the stage for this historic win. Captain Shreyas Iyer's blistering 71 runs off 36 balls ultimately secured the victory for PBKS.
A pivotal moment for DC occurred when Karun Nair dropped Shreyas Iyer on two occasions—first in the 15th over when Iyer was on 28, and again in the following over when he was on 35. These missed opportunities proved detrimental, as Iyer quickly reached his half-century in the 16th over.
In the post-match press conference, Axar Patel acknowledged that the team’s poor fielding and missed chances were significant factors in their loss. He emphasized the importance of supporting the bowlers on a high-scoring pitch, noting that dropped catches made their task much more challenging.
“Given the nature of the pitch, if you fail to back your bowlers and keep giving away chances, it’s fair to say we deserved to lose. It was a good pitch, and with a small ground, sixes were inevitable. However, when you fail to capitalize on opportunities, as we did today, it becomes tough,” he remarked.
DC's bowling attack struggled against PBKS, with most bowlers conceding runs at alarming rates. Mukesh Kumar (18.30) and Auqib Nabi Dar (20.50) were particularly expensive, allowing over 18 runs per over. Even the more effective bowlers, like Kuldeep Yadav (11.50) and Axar Patel (11.00), had high economy rates, contributing to a costly outing for the team.
Axar pointed out the need for DC to reevaluate their bowling strategy, especially during the powerplay, along with addressing their fielding issues. He acknowledged that while 264 was a commendable score, recurring mistakes are hindering the team's performance, and they must focus on improvement.
“We need to analyze our bowling unit. The way we bowled during the powerplay, the fielding, and the missed opportunities were crucial factors. Scoring 264 on this pitch is significant, but we cannot keep repeating the same errors. We will review our performance and identify areas for improvement,” Axar stated.
In the match, after opting to bat first, DC showcased an entertaining partnership of 220 runs between KL Rahul (152* off 67 balls, including 16 fours and nine sixes) and Nitish Rana (91* off 44 balls, with 11 fours and four sixes), leading them to a total of 264/2.
PBKS responded aggressively, with Priyansh Arya scoring 43 runs in 17 balls and Prabhsimran Singh contributing 76 runs in 26 balls during the powerplay, amassing 116 runs. Shreyas Iyer's innings of 71* off 36 balls, along with partnerships with Nehal Wadhera (25) and Shashank Singh (19*), enabled PBKS to complete the chase in just 18.5 overs, with six wickets remaining.
