Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings Aim for IPL Glory After Long Wait
Aiming for the IPL Title
As the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off on March 28, both the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are eager to break their 18-year drought for a championship title. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, who has played for both teams, shared insights on their struggles and the reasons behind their lack of success.
During a discussion on JioStar, Pathan highlighted the difficulties faced by Delhi Capitals in scouting talent during the early 2010s. He remarked, "I spent three years with both Punjab and Delhi. When I was with Delhi, Eric Simmons, now the bowling coach for CSK, was at the helm, and there was a push for stability. However, letting go of players like AB de Villiers and having Andre Russell made it challenging to start anew. I played alongside Russell, and while there were talks about giving him more chances, they struggled to fit him consistently into the playing XI. Talent identification was a significant area where Delhi fell short."
Punjab Kings' Strategic Changes
Ahead of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings made significant changes, including appointing Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting as their head coach and acquiring Shreyas Iyer for a hefty sum of Rs 26.75 crore during the auction. Their performance improved throughout the tournament, culminating in a final match against RCB.
Pathan emphasized the importance of leadership in Punjab Kings' resurgence since IPL 2025, stating, "Leadership has been crucial in Punjab's turnaround. Winning at the auction table is half the battle. While having a large budget doesn't guarantee success, they managed to make the right choices and reached the final. In the mini-auction, they made bold decisions, such as releasing underperformers like Glenn Maxwell."
Investing in Future Talent
Pathan also pointed out that Punjab Kings have made substantial investments in their backup players. He noted, "In the past, Punjab struggled with depth, focusing solely on the first XI. Now, they have all-rounders like Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen, and Marcus Stoinis, along with a promising young Indian batting lineup. They went all-in for Shreyas Iyer after naming him captain, showing clarity in their strategy. I believe Punjab is heading in the right direction."
