Delhi Capitals Seek to Build Momentum

Following a morale-boosting victory against LSG, the Delhi Capitals are set to face the strong Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL on Sunday, bolstered by the return of wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, after a strong start to their season, faced a setback with a five-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants, revealing vulnerabilities in their explosive batting lineup.

As they step out of their home ground, the pressure mounts on captain Pat Cummins to lead a comeback.

Delhi Capitals will benefit from Rahul's return, who missed the opening match due to the birth of his first child.

Rahul, a key player in India's recent Champions Trophy victory in Dubai, was acquired by Delhi Capitals for ₹14 crore. Despite his extensive experience, he has opted not to captain the team, leaving that role to Axar Patel.

Once a vital player for India across formats, Rahul was excluded from the T20 World Cup-winning squad last year and faced challenges during his time with LSG, which led to his release.

His on-field disagreements with team owner Sanjiv Goenka became notable discussions last season.

Now, Rahul is eager to showcase his skills at a new franchise and make a fresh start.

“I’ve been out of the T20 team for a while. I know where I stand as a player, and I know what I need to do to get back. This IPL is an opportunity to rediscover my game and push for a return to the T20 squad,” Rahul stated recently.

Before joining the Delhi Capitals camp, he was seen training under India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in Mumbai.

Rahul's presence will provide much-needed stability to Delhi's top order, which struggled in their last match.

In a thrilling one-wicket victory while chasing 211, DC found themselves in a precarious position at 65/5, but Ashutosh Sharma (66 not out off 31 balls) and Vipraj Nigam (39 at No. 8) turned the game around. Tristan Stubbs also contributed with a valuable 34 runs at No. 6.

Beyond his batting prowess, Rahul will play a crucial role in the leadership group, offering vital support to Patel, who is captaining an IPL team for the first time.

Delhi has often struggled to finish games in recent seasons, but their hard-fought win over LSG should instill confidence in the squad.

The Capitals boast a strong bowling lineup led by Mitchell Starc, whose matchup with fellow Australian Travis Head is anticipated to be a highlight.

Starc, along with Axar and Kuldeep Yadav, will be essential in countering SRH's explosive opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Head. Stubbs and Mohit Sharma can also provide crucial breakthroughs in the latter stages of the game.

SRH made a statement with a score of 286/6 in their season opener, featuring Ishan Kishan's explosive 106 off 47 balls, supported by Head (67 off 31) and Abhishek Sharma (24 off 11).

However, they stumbled in their second match, managing only 190/9 against LSG.

Wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen acknowledged the need for improvement, emphasizing the importance of converting starts into significant totals.

“A score of 210-220 would have been par on the wicket. Overall, we just didn’t put enough runs on the board. Losing wickets at crucial moments disrupted our momentum. We need to ensure that doesn’t happen frequently,” Klaasen remarked.

SRH's bowling attack, featuring Mohammed Shami, Cummins, and Harshal Patel, remains formidable but was underwhelming against LSG.

Cummins, in particular, had a challenging outing, conceding an average of 15 runs per over. The Australian captain will be eager to bounce back and lead his team effectively.
