CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad Reflects on MS Dhoni's Uncertain Future and Team's Young Talent
Ruturaj Gaikwad Discusses MS Dhoni's Future and Team Dynamics
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], May 22: After the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) final group stage match in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) against the Gujarat Titans (GT), skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad shared insights regarding the legendary MS Dhoni's future, which remains unclear. He mentioned that even he will learn about Dhoni's plans for next year.
Gaikwad acknowledged that Dhoni's absence has significantly impacted the team, particularly during crucial moments in the death overs, where his presence could shift the game's momentum and instill fear in opponents. He emphasized that CSK felt the void left by Dhoni's game-changing abilities throughout this season.
Despite uncertainties about the next season, Gaikwad expressed satisfaction with the team's efforts and the valuable experience gained by younger players during the campaign.
Dhoni was sidelined for the entire IPL 2026 season due to a calf injury. Following their title win in 2023, CSK has now faced elimination from the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, finishing in the group stage each time.
CSK's IPL 2026 journey concluded with a heavy defeat to GT in Ahmedabad, where they lost by 89 runs.
“Will we see MS Dhoni next season? You will find out next year, just like I will. His absence has been a significant loss for us. He has the ability to intimidate the opposition, especially in the final overs, and can change the game just by being at the crease. We certainly missed him this season. While the future remains uncertain, I am pleased with the performance of our players and the experience they gained this year,” Gaikwad stated after the match.
Gaikwad also highlighted the rise of young talent within CSK as the team prepares for a rebuild. He noted that moving on from seasoned players like Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu has created opportunities for newcomers such as Kartik Sharma, Urvil Patel, and Dewald Brevis.
He praised Kartik Sharma for his impressive performances, recognizing his potential while also pointing out areas for growth. Gaikwad mentioned that Urvil Patel, who played a full season for the first time, may have felt the weight of expectations but will benefit from the experience gained.
Gaikwad expressed confidence that these young players will develop further with more exposure, helping CSK to return stronger in the upcoming season.
“Regarding the youngsters who can lead this team forward, transitioning from experienced players like Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu has opened doors for talents like Kartik Sharma and Urvil Patel, who is also playing a full season for the first time. There are high expectations, which can be challenging, but gaining match experience is invaluable. We will definitely come back stronger next year,” he concluded.
