CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad Reflects on Bowling Struggles After Defeat to PBKS
CSK's Bowling Woes Lead to Consecutive Losses
In a recent match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad pointed out the team's inadequate bowling performance against Punjab Kings (PBKS), resulting in their second straight loss in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Despite posting an impressive total of 209 runs while batting first, CSK could not secure a win.
Although CSK set a target of 209/5, PBKS successfully chased it down in just 18.2 overs. The CSK bowlers struggled significantly, with Matt Henry conceding 54 runs in 4 overs and Anshul Kamboj giving away 43 runs in 3.4 overs, allowing PBKS to score with ease.
During the post-match presentation, Gaikwad acknowledged the inconsistency in CSK's bowling, stating that they failed to apply pressure at crucial moments, which kept the required run rate manageable for the PBKS batsmen.
He remarked, "At times, we executed our plans well, but there were moments we fell short. The pressure didn’t build as it should have. There was a moment when the required run rate reached 11, and a couple of good overs could have pushed it to 12-13. We lacked momentum in the middle overs. It’s disappointing, but there were positives too. Ayush played brilliantly, and Shivam also performed well. We had confidence in our batting, but there’s much to improve in our bowling."
Gaikwad expressed that he believed the total was competitive given the pitch conditions, which favored both pace and spin bowlers.
"I think it was a solid score. The wicket was more suited for pace bowlers, but the slower deliveries also had grip. With the large boundaries, I felt we had a good total," he added.
In his innings, Gaikwad scored 28 runs off 22 balls. He mentioned that his strategy was to stay at the crease and build his innings due to the challenging pitch, but he was dismissed at an unfortunate time.
"I aimed to stick around today. The wicket was gripping, so I planned to hold on and then accelerate, but I got out at a bad moment," he explained.
In the match, CSK batted first, with notable contributions from Ayush Mhatre, who scored 73 runs off 43 balls, Shivam Dube with 45 not out off 28 balls, and Sarfaraz Khan, who added 32 runs off just 12 balls.
For PBKS, a significant partnership of 61 runs between Priyansh Arya, who scored 39 runs off 11 balls, and Prabhsimran Singh, who made 43 runs off 34 balls, along with a quick 36 runs off 22 balls from Cooper Connolly and a half-century from skipper Iyer, who scored 50 runs off 29 balls, led them to victory in 18.4 overs.
