Punjab Kings Triumph in IPL Opener

Mullanpur (Punjab) [India], March 31: A remarkable unbeaten 72 from Cooper Connolly propelled Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a thrilling three-wicket victory against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) opener held in Mullanpur on Tuesday.

After being invited to bat first, GT managed to post a total of 162/6, with captain Shubman Gill scoring 39 runs off 27 balls, including six boundaries, and Jos Buttler contributing 38 runs from 33 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes. In pursuit of 163, PBKS initially appeared in control but faced a dramatic collapse due to a fiery spell from Prasidh Krishna, who took 3 wickets for just 15 runs in three overs, reducing PBKS from 110/2 to 118/6. Connolly, however, remained steadfast, finishing with 72 runs off 44 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes, and clinched the win with a boundary on the first ball of the final over.

The chase began on a shaky note for PBKS as Kagiso Rabada dismissed Priyansh Arya for just seven runs, leaving the team at 7/1 in 1.2 overs.

Prabhsimran Singh then partnered with Connolly, and the duo launched an aggressive counterattack against Rabada in the fourth over, scoring 19 runs, with Prabhsimran hitting two sixes and Connolly adding another six.

In the following over, Ashok Sharma, making his IPL debut, faced a similar fate as Connolly hit a six and Prabhsimran struck a four, bringing the score to 50 runs in just five overs. Ashok's over cost 13 runs.

The pair reached their 50-run partnership in just 31 balls, continuing to pile on runs against the spinners.

Rashid Khan eventually broke the 76-run partnership by dismissing Prabhsimran, who scored a brisk 37 off 24 balls, including four fours and four sixes, leaving PBKS at 83/2 in 9.3 overs.

In the 11th over, Ashok's two short deliveries were dispatched for sixes, and PBKS crossed the 100-run mark in 11.1 overs.

A moment of concern arose when Iyer was struck on the wrist while attempting to defend a shot from Connolly. Despite receiving medical attention, he was dismissed on the very next ball by Prasidh Krishna, scoring 18 runs off 11 balls, leaving PBKS at 110/3 in 12.1 overs.

Things took a turn for the worse as Washington Sundar dismissed Nehal Wadhera for just three runs, followed by Prasidh taking out Shashank Singh for four and Marcus Stoinis for a duck, leaving PBKS in a precarious position at 118/6 in 14.4 overs.

Connolly then steadied the ship, hitting a four to reach his half-century on his IPL debut in just 34 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes. A six from him and Marco Jansen helped reduce the target.

However, Ashok Sharma struck again, dismissing Jansen for nine runs off ten balls, leaving PBKS at 144/7 in 17.4 overs.

Ultimately, PBKS completed their chase in 19.1 overs, with Connolly hitting the winning boundary.

Prasidh Krishna's impressive bowling figures of 3/29 in four overs posed a significant challenge, but Connolly's performance ensured PBKS emerged victorious.

Earlier, Punjab Kings' bowlers Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yuzi Chahal played crucial roles in restricting Gujarat Titans to 162/6 in their innings, preventing any substantial partnerships.

Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler were the standout performers for GT, with Gill scoring 39 runs off 27 balls and Buttler adding 38 runs off 30 balls. Vyshak finished with figures of 3/34, while Chahal took 2/28, and Marco Jansen contributed with 1/20, effectively limiting GT's scoring opportunities.

GT's innings began steadily, with Gill and Sai Sudharsan forming a solid opening partnership. However, Marco Jansen broke the stand by dismissing Sudharsan for 13 runs, leaving GT at 37/1.

Buttler joined Gill and quickly made his intentions clear, hitting boundaries off both Vyshak and Jansen. GT reached 50 runs in just 5.4 overs.

By the end of the powerplay, GT was at 54/1, with Buttler and Gill both looking strong.

As the innings progressed, Yuzi Chahal struck again, dismissing Gill for 39 runs, caught by Connolly, leaving GT at 83/2.

GT struggled to build partnerships, with Chahal taking out Buttler for 38 runs and Vyshak removing Washington Sundar, leaving GT at 144/5.

GT concluded their innings at 162/6, with Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan remaining unbeaten. Vyshak and Chahal's exceptional bowling spells were pivotal in restricting GT's scoring.
