Cooper Connolly Shines on IPL Debut as Punjab Kings Triumph Over Gujarat Titans
Connolly's Impressive IPL Debut
In his first IPL match, Punjab Kings' batter Cooper Connolly revealed that head coach Ricky Ponting encouraged him to take charge while he anticipated learning from captain Shreyas Iyer during the game against Gujarat Titans.
Connolly delivered a stellar performance, scoring an unbeaten 72 runs off 44 balls, featuring 5 fours and 5 sixes, leading Punjab Kings to a successful start in IPL 2026 on Tuesday.
Reflecting on his debut, Connolly shared with JioStar, "I woke up feeling a bit nervous, which was a good sign. I was eager to contribute to the team as best as I could."
He added, "Ricky Ponting helped me stay composed, advising me to play my natural game and dominate. It was a solid team effort, and our bowling was particularly strong, which eased our task."
Learning from the Best
The 22-year-old expressed his excitement about spending time on the field with Shreyas Iyer, stating, "I was keen to pick his brain a bit. He’s a world-class player. I’ve faced him in matches for Australia A and Australia, and there’s a reason he’s regarded so highly. I hope to absorb as much knowledge as possible from him."
Connolly also mentioned his admiration for former Australia and PBKS player Shaun Marsh, saying, "When I got picked, Shaun was the first person I reached out to, and he offered me some encouraging words."
He continued, "Having played alongside him in Western Australia for a long time, he has always been supportive, and I see him as both a mentor and an idol."
Kumble's Insights on Gujarat Titans' Strategy
In a surprising turn, legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble commented on Gujarat Titans' decision to introduce their leading bowler from the previous season, Prasidh Krishna, late in the match.
Prasidh delivered an impressive performance with figures of 3 wickets for 29 runs in 4 overs, but his late entry could not save the Titans from defeat.
"It was unexpected that Gujarat Titans brought in Prasidh Krishna, the Purple Cap holder from IPL 2025, only in the 13th over," Kumble remarked.
"His short length troubled the batters throughout the match, but he was brought in too late. It’s rare for a bowler to bowl all four overs in the last eight overs of an innings," he added.
Chahal's Tactical Bowling
Discussing Yuzvendra Chahal, who recorded impressive figures of 2 wickets for 28 runs in 4 overs, Kumble praised the veteran leg-spinner for his strategic adjustments during his spells.
"He didn’t overdo the variations in his approach. Instead, he bowled slightly wider and was very astute in his tactics. He assessed the conditions and targeted the larger side of the ground," Kumble observed.
"He understood that if someone wanted to hit him on that side, they would need to connect perfectly, which they failed to do. The wickets of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler were crucial for Punjab Kings, especially since Gill was looking set to capitalize on a strong start," he concluded.
