Cooper Connolly Aims for IPL Glory with Punjab Kings in 2026
Cooper Connolly's Ambitions in IPL 2026
New Delhi [India] - April 9: In his inaugural season with the IPL, all-rounder Cooper Connolly from Punjab Kings is determined to secure the championship for his team, while also paying tribute to the legendary Australian players who have previously donned the franchise's colors.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings have kicked off IPL 2026 with an impressive performance, remaining undefeated thus far. The team, which finished as runners-up last season, is set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mullanpur this Saturday.
Throughout the years, numerous distinguished Australian cricketers, including Shaun Marsh, Adam Gilchrist, Josh Inglis, and Glenn Maxwell, have played for Punjab Kings. As one of the latest recruits, Connolly aspires to make his mark and contribute to the team's achievements.
In a recent interview with JioStar Press Room ahead of the IPL 2026 Rivalry Week, Connolly expressed, “Winning IPL trophies is a goal for everyone involved. While leaving a legacy is appealing, the players you mentioned are world-class, and I have much to learn from them. My focus is on the present.”
Connolly is eager to give his all for the team and aims to help them clinch the IPL trophy this season. “Joining a team means wanting to leave a mark, and I hope that mark is an IPL trophy this year. My priority is to play my role effectively and contribute to the team's success,” he stated.
Having idolized Shaun Marsh during his youth, Connolly now shares the dressing room with Australia's T20I captain, Mitchell Marsh. He also plays for Western Australia in domestic cricket, similar to the Marsh brothers.
Shaun Marsh made a significant impact during the inaugural IPL season in 2008, scoring an unbeaten 84 on his debut against Deccan Chargers.
Interestingly, Connolly has also made a strong start to his IPL journey. He marked his debut with a match-winning performance, scoring an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls against Gujarat Titans, leading Punjab Kings to a three-wicket victory while chasing a target of 163, and earning the Player of the Match accolade.
Reflecting on his admiration for Marsh, Connolly shared, “I grew up watching Shaun Marsh play. Fortunately, I have a good relationship with both Mitch and Shaun. I now play alongside Mitch, and I’ve had some conversations with Shaun during his playing days, which I cherished.”
When discussing similarities in their batting techniques, he remarked, “Some people mention the cover drive. I think his is more graceful than mine. I loved watching him play; he had so much time at the crease and played the game on his own terms, which I admire. I aspire to play in a similar fashion. There’s still plenty of cricket left in this tournament, and I’m sure I’ll connect with him at some point.”
