In a recent IPL 2026 match, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi faced a controversial dismissal for obstructing the field during the game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). This decision has ignited discussions, particularly after former Indian cricketer Rohan Gavaskar expressed doubts about its validity.
The incident unfolded in the fifth over of KKR's innings when Raghuvanshi was ruled out for obstructing the field. His reaction was one of frustration, as he struck the boundary cushion with his bat and tossed his helmet into the dugout.
This ruling has led to varying interpretations of the 'obstructing the field' rule, with opinions divided on whether Raghuvanshi's actions were intentional interference.
Gavaskar, speaking to a cricket platform, disagreed with the on-field call, arguing that the dismissal should not have been upheld given the batter's intent and situational awareness at that moment.
"I believe it should be not out because when the ball was coming, the batter was diving without looking at it. His focus was solely on executing the dive," Gavaskar stated.
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag also raised questions about whether Lucknow's captain, Rishabh Pant, could have opted to withdraw the appeal, suggesting that while the dismissal might have been legally correct, it was harsh in terms of the game's spirit.
On the following day, Raghuvanshi was penalized 20% of his match fee and received one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against LSG.
According to an official IPL statement, Raghuvanshi was found guilty of a Level 1 offense under Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which pertains to the misuse of cricket equipment or clothing during a match.
"Angkrish Raghuvanshi, batter and wicket-keeper for KKR, has been fined 20% of his match fee and has also received one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL's Code of Conduct during Match No. 38 against Lucknow Super Giants," the statement detailed.
"Raghuvanshi was determined to have violated Article 2.2 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which addresses the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing during a match. This incident occurred in the fifth over when Raghuvanshi, after being declared out for 'obstructing the field,' aggressively struck the boundary cushion with his bat and threw his helmet into the dugout," the statement continued.
Level 1 breaches can result in penalties ranging from reprimands to fines and demerit points, depending on the offense's severity.
"Raghuvanshi acknowledged the offense and accepted the Match Referee's sanction," concluded the IPL statement.
In terms of the match outcome, KKR triumphed over LSG in a thrilling Super Over at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. LSG needed seven runs off the final ball, and Mohammed Shami hit a six over long-off, pushing the game into a Super Over.
Earlier, KKR's innings faced a setback due to Mohsin Khan's impressive five-wicket haul (5/23), but Rinku Singh's outstanding unbeaten 83 off 51 balls, which included seven fours and five sixes, helped KKR recover to a competitive total of 155/7.
KKR's bowlers maintained pressure on LSG throughout the innings, but Shami's dramatic last-ball six forced the match into a nail-biting Super Over. Rinku Singh was named Player of the Match for his exceptional performance.
